Cancer Services: Motion (20 May 2008)

Jan O'Sullivan: I welcome the opportunity to join the Fine Gael Party in proposing this motion on cancer services in the north west. I welcome those in the Gallery who have travelled long distances to be here to listen to the debate.

Cancer Services: Motion (20 May 2008)

Jan O'Sullivan: I want to begin by assuring the Minister and Professor Tom Keane that we have no intention of reopening consideration of the cancer strategy or setting it back in any way. I note that in the media Professor Keane suggested that is what we might be trying to do. We want to make one change only, a change that we signalled from the start. We in the Labour Party fully support the proposal to...

Cancer Services: Motion (20 May 2008)

Jan O'Sullivan: I should be clear. Whatever we say here we will repeat in the regions. What I stated on Ocean FM radio a few months ago I am repeating clearly in the Dáil and I stand over it.

Cancer Services: Motion (20 May 2008)

Jan O'Sullivan: I stress that we are not in favour of maintaining unsafe services. That is why we only advocate this one exception and why we have included in our motion yearly audits of all designated centres, both full centres of excellence and outreach centres. The disregard for the lives of women and men who have been misdiagnosed because of bungling, bad organisation and governance, poor resources or...

Order of Business (15 May 2008)

Jan O'Sullivan: I know, and I am asking for a proper debate in this House because the Minister no longer holds responsibility for the cervical screening programme because she has farmed it out to a particular organisation so we cannot raise it with the Minister in the normal way. We will lose jobs in this country to the United States. We have accredited laboratories and expertise in this area.

Jan O'Sullivan: Perhaps the Leas-Cheann Comhairle will tell me when I have almost taken up the first minutes.

Irish Economy: Motion (Resumed) (14 May 2008)

Jan O'Sullivan: I commend my colleague, Deputy Joan Burton, for tabling this motion and giving us the opportunity to debate the economy at this crucial time, particularly in light of the information we have been getting on a downturn in the economy in recent years and in light of the fact we have a new Taoiseach. Sadly, despite what Deputy Kelly stated earlier, that one third of all the houses in Ireland...

Irish Economy: Motion (Resumed) (14 May 2008)

Jan O'Sullivan: We need to invest here at home in infrastructure such as schools, as was stated last night, but also, for example, in the health care area. There is a verbal commitment to community care teams. We could invest in buildings where we could have GPs, physiotherapists, social workers, public health nurses etc. in their communities working in multi-integrated teams. That is how we should be...

Leaders' Questions (14 May 2008)

Jan O'Sullivan: That is not the main problem; the main problem is the embargo on posts.
