Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Covid-19 Contact Tracing: HSE (28 Oct 2020)

Bernard Durkan: I feel we will be revisiting this subject. I would like to congratulate all the front-line staff and thank them for their efforts. As I said previously in the House, it seems contradictory for staff to put their health and their lives at risk by working around the clock in some cases while other people in society ignore simple regulations that could make their jobs a lot easier.

Level 5 Response to Covid-19: Statements (Resumed) (23 Oct 2020)

Bernard Durkan: I am delighted to have an opportunity to speak on this issue again. I sometimes get confused. Listening to the debate in this House and in other countries that have been similarly affected, one can come to a different conclusion. For instance, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, France, Belgium, Denmark and Sweden have all been held up as examples of how to deal successfully with this virus....

Health (Amendment) Bill 2020: Second Stage (23 Oct 2020)

Bernard Durkan: I have listened with interest to the debate on this Bill, which follows on from many similar debates in recent months. Lest Opposition Members feel that the Government is repressive and not conscious of the need to observe civil liberties, I assure them that the reverse is the case. Members of the Government are as alert as anybody else in this House to the fact that it is unfortunate that...

Residential Tenancies Bill 2020: Second Stage (22 Oct 2020)

Bernard Durkan: I believe the next speaker is from the Government. Is it Deputy Richard Bruton? It is a long distance.

Ceisteanna ar Reachtaíocht a Gealladh - Questions on Promised Legislation (22 Oct 2020)

Bernard Durkan: Like everybody in the House, I have received numerous communications from my constituents concerned about another lockdown. Their concern arises because they have kept to the rules and regulations but there have been large-scale breaches of those rules by groups throughout the country. Given that the long weekend is coming, I plead with all concerned, and ask the Tánaiste to carry this...

Health (Preservation and Protection and other Emergency Measures in the Public Interest Act) 2020 - Part 3: Motion (22 Oct 2020)

Bernard Durkan: I apologise for my late arrival this morning. It was due to a pile-up on the motorway. I am glad I was not involved, but it delayed my journey by some time. I have listened carefully to the debate and I appreciate fully the importance of the issues and the need for a sound basis for the decision taken by the Government. The Minister and I have had past incarnations where we did not...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Gangland Crime (22 Oct 2020)

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Gangland Crime (22 Oct 2020)

Bernard Durkan: This question relates to the activities of criminal gangs and the degree to which success has been achieved in dealing with them. It is an issue that has been raised many times in the House. I have raised it myself on many occasions and I look forward to the reply.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Gangland Crime (22 Oct 2020)

Bernard Durkan: I thank the Minister for her comprehensive reply. May I further inquire as to whether, in the proposed legislation, it is intended to further amend the bail laws? In the past, those laws were seen as being capable of being circumvented by criminal gangs. In addition, recidivism was an issue. Is it intended in the course of the proposed legislation to look again at this particular area of...
