- Seanad: Order of Business (18 Nov 2009)
Donie Cassidy: I look forward to her contribution to the work of the new Commission, which includes the challenge of overseeing the implementation of the Lisbon treaty. When we heard the news yesterday evening we discussed the possibility of bringing it before the Committee on Procedure and Privileges with a view to inviting the Commissioner to the House at the earliest opportunity. In regard to the call...
- Seanad: Order of Business (18 Nov 2009)
Donie Cassidy: Senator Quinn's contribution this morning was outstanding and deserves a wider audience. Those of us who run or have run our own businesses know only too well that there is no guaranteed income for the self-employed. I fully agree with Senator Quinn that the only consideration must be that the best person for the job is appointed. Taxpayers will benefit from having the most qualified...

- Seanad: Order of Business (18 Nov 2009)
Donie Cassidy: I have always held the commission in high regard. I apologise if I misunderstood the Senator, particularly the last part of his contribution. I have no difficulty in setting time aside to discuss the issues he has brought to the attention of the House. I will get back to Senator Coghlan regarding the Property Services (Regulation) Bill 2009. As I said, Senator Quinn made an outstanding...

Donie Cassidy: That is a matter for the Committee on Procedure and Privileges which will meet at 12.15 p.m. Perhaps the Senator could speak to the leader of his group and ask him to raise it under "any other business".

Donie Cassidy: Senators Cummins, O'Toole, Alex White, Boyle, McFadden, Ross, Coghlan, MacSharry, Bacik, Callely, Donohoe, John Paul Phelan, Regan and Buttimer all expressed views on the appointment of personnel in the banks. No decision has been made yet. I agree with many colleagues on the banks making money available and on the banks and the Government getting together to ensure the flow of credit...
- Seanad: Order of Business (17 Nov 2009)
Donie Cassidy: As we all know, two or three very remote areas find it very hard to get a television signal. Some 4% will have a difficulty no matter what technology is available.
- Seanad: Order of Business (17 Nov 2009)
Donie Cassidy: It is a huge step forward no matter what part of the country one is from or what team one supports in the all-Ireland, whether it is Kerry or Kilkenny. Senators Mary White, à Murchú and Mullen welcomed the publication of the Irish language newspaper. It is great to hear the Irish Independent will distribute it every Wednesday. I fully support the sentiments expressed and thank Senators...
- Seanad: Order of Business (17 Nov 2009)
Donie Cassidy: Very many people want to play their part. I fully agree with most of the sentiments expressed by colleagues. Senators Ellis and Buttimer referred to an inquiry regarding the circumstances of students. Senator Buttimer may not have given a satisfactory reply in that respect. I know what that feels like here on occasions.
- Seanad: Order of Business (17 Nov 2009)
Donie Cassidy: I trust the Senator will do his best in the long term to clarify the position for Senator Ellis. Senators Hannigan and John Paul Phelan referred to the reopening of the Belfast-Drogheda-Dublin line. I congratulate everyone involved on their endeavours in completing the work on time. It was terrific to see the rail line re-opened yesterday. In regard to the Wexford line, I will pass on the...

Donie Cassidy: ââfor all they are doing. Hundreds of lives have been saved on our roads but thousands of people have been saved from serious injury as a result of the various changes introduced ranging from penalty points to random breath testing and speed cameras will also be introduced. - Seanad: National Asset Management Agency Bill 2009: Motions (12 Nov 2009)
Donie Cassidy: I am glad the point was clarified about there being no guillotine in the Seanad. I join Senator Norris in expressing the view that I hope the Department considered Peter Mathews' advice. I would like to think we as parliamentarians appreciate it when people with professional expertise give advice voluntarily. I hope the Minister of State can assure us the Department took into account and...
