Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Governance and Child Protection Policy: Scouting Ireland (9 May 2018)

Denise Mitchell: I have a few brief questions if you can bear with me for a moment, Chairman. Could Dr. Lawlor explain the process undertaken by Scouting Ireland when it is advised by the Garda to vet somebody? How long does the vetting process take?

Denise Mitchell: Dr. Lawlor previously told the committee in respect of cases where a complaint was made that the person who made the complainant was supported and that he or she would be provided with counselling while the complaint was being investigated. Will he outline to the committee what supports are in place in Scouting Ireland for someone who makes a complaint and for the person who is the subject...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Governance and Child Protection Policy: Scouting Ireland (9 May 2018)

Denise Mitchell: Mr. Elliot said in his opening statement that he identified serious weaknesses in the structure, and pointed particularly to the vulnerability of volunteers to lobbying. Were there cases of lobbying within the organisation? If so, was the onus on the team to report it to the management board? If so, what action was taken?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Governance and Child Protection Policy: Scouting Ireland (9 May 2018)

Denise Mitchell: Are we straying into the unknown?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Governance and Child Protection Policy: Scouting Ireland (9 May 2018)

Report on the Provision of Foster Care Services in Ireland: Motion (3 May 2018)

Denise Mitchell: I welcome the report and the recommendations contained therein. The work on it had been largely completed before I joined the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Children and Youth Affairs, but I express my thanks to those members who worked on the report. It does a very good job in reflecting the concerns representatives from all parties and none have about the state of the foster care system....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Tackling Childhood Obesity: Discussion (Resumed) (2 May 2018)

Denise Mitchell: I thank the witnesses for their presentations. The school programmes, Super Troopers and Food Dudes, are fantastic. I know them because I have three young children. I dread when the charts are brought home but my children love hanging them on the wall and keeping a writing record of their physical activity and healthy eating. However, one of my children is in sixth class and she finds...

Denise Mitchell: Yes.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Tackling Childhood Obesity: Discussion (Resumed) (2 May 2018)

Denise Mitchell: When I had my daughter in 2005, there was a big push on breastfeeding. I remember how there was a breastfeeding clinic in the Rotunda that was so helpful to mothers starting off. There were breastfeeding support groups when women came out into the community and the community mothers scheme whose members used to pop in. It is important that someone has support. One of the big issues is...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Tackling Childhood Obesity: Discussion (Resumed) (2 May 2018)

Denise Mitchell: What would one do then? A teacher would probably raise it if they had concerns because a child was struggling during PE. How can it be taken to the next level? Is it a case of saying to parents "excuse me, Ms Mitchell, your children are..." and hoping for the best or will we supply the parents with advice on healthy eating and exercise regimes?
