- Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (14 Oct 2021)
Pat Buckley: I want to acknowledge the work the secretariat has put in. It is a fair and strongly-worded reply. It is practically self-explanatory. I wanted to put that on the record.
- Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (14 Oct 2021)
Pat Buckley: Indeed. I was not responding to the Senator; my words were intended for the secretariat.
- Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (14 Oct 2021)
Pat Buckley: I agree with the Chair. I suspect this is not a one-off case. One-house and two-house builds in east Cork are finding a bit of resistance when it comes to supplying services. It is affecting how people can build their family homes. I certainly agree that we should bring in somebody from any council and any part of the water service to try to iron out this issue and help everybody.
- Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (14 Oct 2021)
Pat Buckley: I suggest we get both parties in. We might as well.
- Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (14 Oct 2021)
Pat Buckley: Agreed.
- Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Road Projects (13 Oct 2021)
Pat Buckley: 106. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if there is a commitment in the National Development Plan to fund two relief roads projects in Killeagh and Castlemartyr, County Cork; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [50113/21]
- Joint Committee On Health: Impact of Covid-19 on Addiction Services: Discussion (13 Oct 2021)
Pat Buckley: I thank the witnesses for their honesty. I will try to keep it brief. We are talking about the impact of Covid. My first question is very simple. If the witnesses could predict the future, do they envisage a bigger demand, or a tsunami of demand, on services within the next 12 months? I ask that because when it comes to addiction and mental health problems, it takes people who are stuck...
- Joint Committee On Health: Impact of Covid-19 on Addiction Services: Discussion (13 Oct 2021)
Pat Buckley: I have a brief question about access to services. We have heard with regard to other aspects of mental health that there is difficulty in getting access to services. This is probably a two-part question. Is it easier to access the witnesses' services than mental health services or child and adolescent mental health services, CAMHS or are they having capacity issues whereby they would wish...
- Joint Committee On Health: Impact of Covid-19 on Addiction Services: Discussion (13 Oct 2021)
Pat Buckley: As I have said in other committees, particularly the Joint Committee on Health, people with disabilities are not sick but they are labelled and put into a particular section because it makes it easier to tuck them away. These people have the exact same feelings and it is just as possible for them to develop an addiction and so on. I hate using the word "disability", but when talking to...
- Recovery of Tourism and Aviation: Statements (7 Oct 2021)
Pat Buckley: I thank the Minister for being here today and welcome the opportunity to speak. I listened to a lot of the speakers. We are an island that is deeply dependent on air and sea travel, but supporting the aviation sector during the pandemic was vital. I agree that the TWSS should go forward. I was very surprised by the number of pilots who live in my area, and heard their stories and the...
- Joint Committee On Health: Mental Health Services: Samaritans Ireland (5 Oct 2021)
Pat Buckley: I thank Mr. Mulligan, Ms Stack and Mr. Fitzgerald. It was going lovely. It was nice to have a good news story until they came to the latest exchange with Mr. Fitzgerald on funding. I am amazed at the coverage that they have managed to maintain, even over the pace of 2020. I read some of the reports and I noted that. Often, when we talk to younger people, it is about doing things...
- Joint Committee On Health: Mental Health Services: Samaritans Ireland (5 Oct 2021)
Pat Buckley: It is a gift when people want to give back and become volunteers. The Samaritans should be proud of what they do. I love the idea of creating mini-Samaritans because such an initiative breaks down stigma. If there is anything that I or we can do in the future the witnesses have my email details. On a personal and public level, I am there for the Samaritans if there is anything that they...
- Cork University Maternity Hospital: Statements (30 Sep 2021)
Pat Buckley: I thank the Minister for being present. The core of his opening statement was the last line when he said that these families deserve to know that the health service has learned from what happened to them so it never happens again. I am physically sick to my stomach because a long time ago I was in the situation of helping one of my best friends to bury a baby and it just brings back the...
- Committee on Public Petitions: Business of Committee (30 Sep 2021)
Pat Buckley: Thank you, everyone. I welcome you all to our public virtual meeting using Microsoft Teams. We have received apologies from Deputy Martin Browne and Senator Craughwell. The first note I have is on housekeeping. The Ceann Comhairle of the Dáil, Deputy Ó Fearghaíl, and the Cathaoirleach of the Seanad, Senator Mark Daly, have appealed to everybody in the parliamentary...
- Committee on Public Petitions: Annual Reports of the Ombudsman for 2018, 2019 and 2020: The Ombudsman (30 Sep 2021)
Pat Buckley: I wish to raise some formal notices regarding privilege and members. I remind members of the constitutional requirement that they must be physically present within the confines of the place in which Parliament has chosen to sit, namely, Leinster House, to participate in public meetings. I will not permit a member to participate where he or she is not adhering to this constitutional...
- Committee on Public Petitions: Annual Reports of the Ombudsman for 2018, 2019 and 2020: The Ombudsman (30 Sep 2021)
Pat Buckley: If there is a delay in recruitment I suspect Mr. Tyndall could be here again next year. Would any member like to ask questions or make comments?
- Committee on Public Petitions: Annual Reports of the Ombudsman for 2018, 2019 and 2020: The Ombudsman (30 Sep 2021)
Pat Buckley: We have just heard the bells for the Seanad so I invite Senator Buttimer to ask his questions because I suspect there is a vote.
- Committee on Public Petitions: Annual Reports of the Ombudsman for 2018, 2019 and 2020: The Ombudsman (30 Sep 2021)
Pat Buckley: I agree with that. I call Senator Murphy. He is otherwise engaged. I will come back to him. Members have touched on disability and Mr. Tyndall mentioned it in his opening statement. It is a bugbear of mine because I feel they have always been treated as second-class citizens. A lift or ramp on a bus or train or an adaptation of a bike for a beach has always been perceived as a luxury...
- Committee on Public Petitions: Annual Reports of the Ombudsman for 2018, 2019 and 2020: The Ombudsman (30 Sep 2021)
Pat Buckley: I will go back to Senator Murphy if he is there. He is gone. If Mr. Tyndall has any closing remarks, we will take them now.
- Committee on Public Petitions: Annual Reports of the Ombudsman for 2018, 2019 and 2020: The Ombudsman (30 Sep 2021)
Pat Buckley: We certainly will. The discussion has absolutely been extremely beneficial and informative. On behalf of the committee I thank the Ombudsman for coming here today, even though it is only virtually. We wish you well in your retirement. Hopefully someday you will actually be able to visit the Oireachtas in person. In the meantime, stay safe.
