- Seanad: Order of Business (21 Jun 2012)
John Gilroy: If Sinn Féin would research the position of the Minister rather than take its political lead from people such as Deputy Luke 'Ming' Flanagan it would be better informed.

- Seanad: Order of Business (21 Jun 2012)
John Gilroy: That is extraordinarily frustrating. However, it leads to me another point I wish to make this morning which again relates to Sinn Féin. I would like to know once and for all if Sinn Féin recognises legitimacy in this State. One look at its website-----
- Seanad: Order of Business (21 Jun 2012)
John Gilroy: I have taken at look at Sinn Féin's website. There is not one single reference to the Republic of Ireland as a country. The only country to which it refers is one called the 26 Counties.
- Seanad: Order of Business (21 Jun 2012)
John Gilroy: For all my criticism of Sinn Féin, there is one voice of reason among them, namely Senator Reilly, whose call for a full debate on the serious problem of youth employment I support. As stated by Senator Reilly, youth employment here stands at 30%. The figure for Greece is 50%, a road we do not want to go down.
- Seanad: Business Undertakings (Disclosure of Overpayments) Bill 2012: Second Stage (13 Jun 2012)
John Gilroy: The Minister is very welcome to the Chamber. Senator Mullen's Bill is a most interesting one to which I have given a great deal of consideration. In his opening remarks the Minister outlined the necessity to demonstrate that the new legal architecture is necessary. The Bill fails to do so in terms of necessity and also in terms of proportionality. The relationship between a supplier of...

- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Jun 2012)
John Gilroy: I note Senator Daly's comments on the pardon announced by the Government for 5,000 brave Irishmen who did what they felt was right. The Senator's comments were a little ungracious and ungenerous. It is correct that the Government would acknowledge the wrong that was done to these men. A pardon was appropriate and should have been given years ago instead of yesterday. I welcome it.

- Seanad: Decade of Commemorations: Statements (Resumed) (7 Jun 2012)
John Gilroy: I welcome the Minister to the Chamber. We have a great opportunity as we approach the series of anniversaries of the events which led to the foundation of the State and, more important, the formation of the consciousness of the State. It is important we appreciate the historical and personal complexities which steered these events and marked them out as a series of defining moments in the...

John Gilroy: You are the Opposition.
- Seanad: NAMA and Irish Bank Resolution Corporation Transparency Bill 2011: Second Stage (6 Jun 2012)
John Gilroy: I welcome the Minister. While we would prefer not to have to do so in the first instance, the acquisition of â¬75 billion worth of loans for an outlay of â¬32 billion illustrates the scale of the collapse of the property sector and the enormous challenge the country faces. It represents a 57% reduction in their par value, as Senator Barrett said. We welcome the recent announcement of...

- Seanad: NAMA and Irish Bank Resolution Corporation Transparency Bill 2011: Second Stage (6 Jun 2012)
John Gilroy: Senator Daly's previous assertions of wrongdoing at NAMA have not been substantiated and I seem to remember an exchange between Senators Daly and Coghlan in the House in which much unsubstantiated comment was made.
