- Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Fiscal Assessment Report: Irish Fiscal Advisory Council (19 Jun 2024)
Pearse Doherty: Does the figure of €700 million, which Professor McMahon provided, also include the under-provision for health?
- Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Fiscal Assessment Report: Irish Fiscal Advisory Council (19 Jun 2024)
Pearse Doherty: The figure is down at €1.5 billion, but there are still €2.2 billion in net tax increases needed just to stand still.
- Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Fiscal Assessment Report: Irish Fiscal Advisory Council (19 Jun 2024)
Pearse Doherty: I understand. Therefore, the point is that one would need to raise approximately €2.4 billion per year in net taxes in order to stand still if it is the case that there is an under-provision of €1.7 billion in health. The IFAC is suggesting that there is another under-provision of €700 million for standstill costs.
- Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Fiscal Assessment Report: Irish Fiscal Advisory Council (19 Jun 2024)
Pearse Doherty: The tax measure is to the tune of €1.1 billion. Because that is indexing tax expenditure, Mr. Conroy would not include it in a net-expenditure rule. Is that correct?
- Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Fiscal Assessment Report: Irish Fiscal Advisory Council (19 Jun 2024)
Pearse Doherty: I understand that, but for the layperson it is maintaining the benefit of the tax system in light of inflation. In terms of social welfare, however, it would be argued that it is the same; it is about maintaining the purchasing power of the social welfare rate, if it is being indexed.
- Hospitality and Tourism Sector: Motion [Private Members] (19 Jun 2024)
Pearse Doherty: Go raibh maith agat, a Chathaoirligh, agus cuirim fáilte roimh an rún seo. Níl dabht ar bith ach go bhfuil ár gcomhlachtaí beaga ag streachailt agus go bhfuil siad mar chnámh droime eacnamaíochta, go háirithe in earnáil na turasóireachta. D'fhulaing siad go mór le cúpla bliain anuas. Our hospitality and tourism sector, which is...

Pearse Doherty: 382. To ask the Minister for Health if funding announced recently to enhance support for children with disabilities in County Donegal came out of the same grant fund, namely the Children’s Disability Service Grant Fund; if this was to be emergency funding; the reason the awarding of the grants took so long; if all applications have now been assessed; the number of applications received...
- Motor Insurance Insolvency Compensation Bill 2024: Second Stage (13 Jun 2024)
Pearse Doherty: Cuirim fáilte roimh an mBille. The legislation has been introduced and the Minister of State talked about its swift passage, but let us call a spade a spade. We need its swift passage because the European Commission has begun proceedings because the Government delayed the transposition of this directive. The European Commission last month took the first step in infringement...

Pearse Doherty: I thank the Ceann Comhairle and let me also, Martin, be associated with the words of the Ceann Comhairle. I wish you all the best in your retirement and thank you, on behalf of Sinn Féin, for all the assistance you gave us and the whole team in the Oireachtas throughout the 22 years. - Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (13 Jun 2024)
Pearse Doherty: I will begin by wishing our colleague Deputy Jennifer Whitmore a speedy recovery. We look forward to welcoming her back to the House. I read this morning that she was taken to hospital. All of us on these benches wish her a speedy recovery. - Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (13 Jun 2024)
Pearse Doherty: I thank the Minister. I agree with him. Anybody who watched that programme last night could not be anything but shocked, appalled and sickened to their core at the distressing images that were presented. This morning I am struggling to find out some information. The Minister may be able to shed some light on it. This is the only licensed abattoir in the State. Is it still operating? Is...

- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Hospital Services (13 Jun 2024)
Pearse Doherty: My office has been inundated with demands for a dedicated outpatient neurology service provided by a consultant neurologist at Letterkenny University Hospital. The community neurorehabilitation team in the north west is seriously understaffed and operating with only one third of the required number of staff. This will not change until the HSE's recruitment embargo is lifted. That...
- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Hospital Services (13 Jun 2024)
Pearse Doherty: I accept that Letterkenny University Hospital currently provides clinics for patients with neurological conditions but it urgently requires a dedicated outpatient neurology service provided by a consultant neurologist. This is not the first time I have raised this issue with the Minister. He previously informed me the review of the neurology services in the north west was under way. The...
- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Hospital Services (13 Jun 2024)
Pearse Doherty: It is not acceptable to make neurology patients travel so far. The campaign group Patients Deserve Better has outlined the impact of this, including the increased costs and waiting lists, as well as unnecessary hospital admissions when services are not provided locally. It is not just the campaign group, however. The HSE model of care report suggests there is a need for a consultant...
