- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Action Plan for Housing and Homelessness: Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government (14 Sep 2016)
Eoin Ó Broin: My party is happy to bypass the pre-legislative scrutiny on the basis the Minister has outlined. However, when we are given the draft Bills, particularly the planning ones relating to An Bord Pleanála and Part 8, any research the Department has that outlines the rationale behind the particular changes the Minister is proposing would be very welcome. Some of us are not yet convinced of...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Action Plan for Housing and Homelessness: Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government (14 Sep 2016)
Eoin Ó Broin: I agree with Senator Boyhan. I was going to say the same but I have only one point to add. It also would be good if, after Cabinet has approved the heads of Bill, the Minister and the Department were able to come to a dedicated meeting of the committee only on the heads of Bill at that stage. That would be helpful.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Action Plan for Housing and Homelessness: Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government (14 Sep 2016)
Eoin Ó Broin: I thank the Minister. I have a couple of follow-on questions from last week. On the one-stop shop that Mr. Brian Kenny is overseeing, one of the concerns I have on the basis of the information we were given at the previous meeting is there would be, if I understand it correctly, a facility, probably in Dublin city centre, where family presenters could go to be assessed as to whether they...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Action Plan for Housing and Homelessness: Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government (14 Sep 2016)
Eoin Ó Broin: I thank the Chairman. As we have drifted into pillars 2 and 3, I have some questions on them. To facilitate other members, I am more than happy for the answers to be given to the committee at a later stage, be they in writing or whatever. I will stick to the questions. In pillar 2, the 47,000 units is broken down into 26,000, 11,000 and 10,000. I had asked previously if it was possible...

- Government Appeal of European Commission Decision on State Aid to Apple: Motion (7 Sep 2016)
Eoin Ó Broin: At the heart of today’s debate is the very simple issue of tax justice. For decades a small number of very large global corporations have been engaged in aggressive tax practices. They have used their financial power to force countries into a race to the bottom. These companies have demanded ever lower tax bills and governments, large and small, have acquiesced. Governments have...

- Housing (Sale of Local Authority Housing) Bill 2016: Second Stage [Private Members] (20 Jul 2016)
Eoin Ó Broin: Sinn Féin supports the principle of tenant purchase. We do so because it keeps families in local authority estates, in particular as their income increases and their ability to purchase homes increases. As the Minister indicated very clearly, that contributes to more sustainable communities with a greater income mix, which is good housing policy. However, a badly designed tenant...

- Planning and Development (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill 2016: First Stage (20 Jul 2016)
Eoin Ó Broin: I may well do that. The Bill I am introducing seeks to reverse a particularly bad decision of the former Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Deputy Alan Kelly. Last year he made a very controversial amendment to the Planning and Development Act which allowed the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, for the first time in planning history, to...
