Order of Business. (13 Dec 2007)

Seymour Crawford: I wish to raise three issues. First, the student support Bill has been promised for a long time. It was to come forward in this session but that has not happened. The second issue has been raised already but an answer was not given in respect of it. It concerns the lack of information from the health service.

Order of Business. (13 Dec 2007)

Seymour Crawford: This question is specific to legislation.

Order of Business. (13 Dec 2007)

Seymour Crawford: The health information Bill.

Order of Business. (13 Dec 2007)

Seymour Crawford: We did not get an answer. It is a vitally important issue——

Order of Business. (13 Dec 2007)

Seymour Crawford: ——because we are not getting answers on health.

Order of Business. (13 Dec 2007)

Seymour Crawford: I said I wanted to raise three issues. On the issue of the EirGrid legislation, two weeks ago the Tánaiste told this House that the problems in the Cavan, Monaghan and Meath areas were being headlined by Fine Gael. I advise the Tánaiste that one of his party's councillors was on radio encouraging people to discuss the issue.

Order of Business. (13 Dec 2007)

Seymour Crawford: When can we have a debate on EirGrid in the Dáil? When will the decision be made as to whether the cable will be laid above or below ground?

Road Safety: Motion (Resumed). (12 Dec 2007)

Seymour Crawford: The issue of road safety comes close to one when someone near and dear is involved. Only last week, a man whom I knew well was killed on a national primary road outside Monaghan. The north east was unique in that it was the only area which had permanent safety camera boxes. However, only three cameras were circulated among them. It is high time this was rolled out nationally. It is also...

Social Welfare Bill 2007: Second Stage (Resumed) (12 Dec 2007)

Seymour Crawford: I welcome many positive changes in the Social Welfare Bill, especially the qualified adult allowance for pensioners. For years I have lobbied for this change because many women were forced by law to give up their jobs in the public service at the time of their marriage. I am sure many young couples find it hard to believe that such a law existed. The women's removal from work also removed...

Order of Business (12 Dec 2007)

Seymour Crawford: Yesterday the Taoiseach informed the House that the nursing home support scheme Bill would not be taken before Christmas but shortly afterwards, as there needs to be a discussion on it. When will the Bill be published in order that discussions can take place? Many are anxious about the issue. In the light of recent events regarding drugs, for young people the most serious drug of all which...

Written Answers — Medical Cards: Medical Cards (11 Dec 2007)

Seymour Crawford: Question 273: To ask the Minister for Health and Children the number of full medical cards available on a county basis; if she is satisfied that the system is working; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [33832/07]

Financial Resolution No. 5: General (Resumed) (11 Dec 2007)

Seymour Crawford: I ask the Acting Chairman to let me know when my time is up because I would not want to take time from Deputy Ring.

Financial Resolution No. 5: General (Resumed) (11 Dec 2007)

Seymour Crawford: Budget 2008 gives a zero gain for low income earners. These are not my words but the words of CORI through the mouth of Fr. Sean Healy. I hold in my hand the document that he presented to us today. It is no wonder the Taoiseach realised that he would at least have to postpone his own income increase of €700 per week when a couple earning €15,000 each or €30,000 per year must look...

Financial Resolution No. 5: General (Resumed) (11 Dec 2007)

Seymour Crawford: Now all these promises have gone by the wayside and instead of a €2 billion surplus, we are now heading towards a €5 billion debt, just to meet increased wages, social welfare etc. I welcome the increase in social welfare and, hopefully, I will get an opportunity to speak on that matter in another debate. It is vital that the Minister for Finance, Deputy Cowen, not only speaks of...

Financial Resolution No. 5: General (Resumed) (11 Dec 2007)

Seymour Crawford: It is not in the plan as it has been removed from it. We need to be sure of the direction we are taking. The last letter I received from the NRA gave no commitment to even making improvements to that road. It said that under the Good Friday Agreement, it was looking at a dualcarriageway from Derry to Dublin, but that will take some time. I plead for moneys to be made available for the...

Order of Business (11 Dec 2007)

Seymour Crawford: For the past 12 months there have been major problems with subventions for nursing homes in the Cavan-Monaghan constituency. No one knows whether it is coming or going. We were first guaranteed the Bill would be before the House in early 2007 and later, before Christmas. Will there be clarification on this? With difficulties in the financial services sector and people becoming concerned...

Budget Statement 2008 (5 Dec 2007)

Seymour Crawford: The sugar industry is dead.

Budget Statement 2008 (5 Dec 2007)

Seymour Crawford: The thousands of extra cards have not come yet. They were promised a year ago.

Seymour Crawford: Question 112: To ask the Minister for Social and Family Affairs the number of persons who to date have applied for carers allowance as a second social welfare income based on the new regulations in place from 30 September 2007; if he is satisfied that enough effort has been made to make sure that all those entitled get their rights; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
