Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: National Aviation Policy (Resumed): Regional Airports (15 Feb 2023)

James O'Connor: That is good news. I commend the work being done on the recovery. I have been to Cork Airport a number of times and it is good to see. One issue that probably applies to all our guests is that airlines are struggling to get aircraft to meet the demand in slots. Aer Lingus, for example, is awaiting new aircraft deliveries. Are there challenges in that regard that are outside the control...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: National Aviation Policy (Resumed): Regional Airports (15 Feb 2023)

James O'Connor: On the security, Cork Airport invested significantly recently, as I believe Shannon Airport did. I understand there is an improved system for people who want to travel through with, say, liquids. How does that work?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: National Aviation Policy (Resumed): Regional Airports (15 Feb 2023)

James O'Connor: Can I have an approximate estimate? Mr. MacCarthy does not have to give us the-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: National Aviation Policy (Resumed): Regional Airports (15 Feb 2023)

James O'Connor: Excellent. What does that mean for the average person going through the airport and the experience they have coming through Cork Airport from a security point of view?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: National Aviation Policy (Resumed): Regional Airports (15 Feb 2023)

James O'Connor: That sounds great. I will raise one particular issue with the Shannon representatives. The Ryder Cup is a huge opportunity for traffic into the west. Has the airport considered doing anything with Fáilte Ireland on a promotional campaign? I am in the west a bit and it is a once in a generation chance to bring back some of the aircraft routes that have been lost. I remember flying to...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: National Aviation Policy (Resumed): Regional Airports (15 Feb 2023)

James O'Connor: I thank Ms Considine.

Veterinary Medicinal Products, Medicated Feed and Fertilisers Regulation Bill 2023: Second Stage (14 Feb 2023)

James O'Connor: I am here for a reason. I am very concerned about antimicrobial resistance and the Department's speed of implementation. I come from a dairy farming background. We milk a sizeable herd at home. As Deputy Sherlock, who has been here longer than I have, would tell the House, Cork East is a constituency steeped in agriculture, particularly dairy farming. Notwithstanding the waffle about...

Veterinary Medicinal Products, Medicated Feed and Fertilisers Regulation Bill 2023: Second Stage (14 Feb 2023)

James O'Connor: Excuse me, Deputy Healy-Rae. When I need to hear from you, I will ask. Will you please leave?

Veterinary Medicinal Products, Medicated Feed and Fertilisers Regulation Bill 2023: Second Stage (14 Feb 2023)

James O'Connor: Mother of God, he was halfway out the Chamber door. My apologies but that was unacceptable.

Veterinary Medicinal Products, Medicated Feed and Fertilisers Regulation Bill 2023: Second Stage (14 Feb 2023)

James O'Connor: Experts who know about farming are, unfortunately, incredibly concerned about antimicrobial resistance. They do not feel it is being taken seriously enough and are concerned about the speed with which this is being implemented. I am hopeful there will be some degree of progress on that issue under the current Minister. The Bill has the potential in the medium term to have a significant...

Written Answers — Department of Finance: Tax Code (14 Feb 2023)

James O'Connor: 196. To ask the Minister for Finance his response to concerns over benefit-in-kind change (details supplied). [7207/23]

Written Answers — Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth: International Protection (14 Feb 2023)

James O'Connor: 436. To ask the Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth if he will address matters raised in correspondence by a person (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6823/23]

Public Accounts Committee: 2021 Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 38 - Health
Chapter 12 - Financial Impact of Cyber Security Attack
(9 Feb 2023)

James O'Connor: I thank the Chair for the opportunity to ask a couple of questions. I want to pursue an issue that arose last week relating to the GP shortage in the country. We learned from information provided to the Committee of Public Accounts that there is a shortage of approximately 1,000 doctors in the country from the number necessary to have a sufficient GP service capable of catering to the needs...

Public Accounts Committee: 2021 Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 38 - Health
Chapter 12 - Financial Impact of Cyber Security Attack
(9 Feb 2023)

James O'Connor: With respect, I asked the question quite clearly and would like Mr. Watt to answer. I think he knows what I am asking him.

Public Accounts Committee: 2021 Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 38 - Health
Chapter 12 - Financial Impact of Cyber Security Attack
(9 Feb 2023)

James O'Connor: Taking that figure of 120, looking at the age profile of GPs, we know that the vast majority are over the age of 50. They are closer to retirement than to graduation. It causes a serious situation where, in ten or 15 years, we will be in a far worse position than we currently are. There is a shortage of approximately 1,000 doctors. Replenishing that with 120 per year is not sufficient....

Public Accounts Committee: 2021 Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 38 - Health
Chapter 12 - Financial Impact of Cyber Security Attack
(9 Feb 2023)

James O'Connor: The retention of graduates is a bigger problem. It is not necessarily just about the output capacity of medical schools in Ireland. There is one in University College Cork, the University of Limerick, National University of Ireland Galway, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Trinity College Dublin and University College Dublin. There are enough medical schools in Ireland to fulfil...

Public Accounts Committee: 2021 Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 38 - Health
Chapter 12 - Financial Impact of Cyber Security Attack
(9 Feb 2023)

James O'Connor: How do we retain them in the country to work in the service? They do not have to stay here for life. We know and accept that, in medical practice, people travel, particularly those who want to become consultants and go on to advanced areas of practising medicine. They need to get international experience. I would argue that, as was exposed in the "RTÉ Investigates" programme...

Public Accounts Committee: 2021 Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 38 - Health
Chapter 12 - Financial Impact of Cyber Security Attack
(9 Feb 2023)

James O'Connor: The critical point is retention. The next time Mr. Watt appears before the Committee of Public Accounts I will ask him about that. If we do not deal with it, we will not deal with the problem.

Written Answers — Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection: School Meals Programme (9 Feb 2023)

James O'Connor: 34. To ask the Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection if her Department is undertaking research into providing an enlarged school meals programme for national and post-primary education; and if estimates are available on the costings of such an undertaking. [5104/23]

Written Answers — Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth: Early Childhood Care and Education (9 Feb 2023)

James O'Connor: 74. To ask the Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth if he will consider allocating additional resources in Cork; if he will address a growing shortfall of childcare facilities in areas experiencing substantial housing and population growth; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4453/23]
