Seanad: Education (Provision in Respect of Children with Special Educational Needs) Bill 2022: Second Stage (11 Jul 2022)

Martin Conway: And so it should.

Seanad: Remediation of Dwellings Damaged By the Use of Defective Concrete Blocks Bill 2022: Second Stage (11 Jul 2022)

Martin Conway: I welcome the Minister to the House. I have visited people in County Clare whose homes are affected by pyrite. They are decent, honest and hard-working people. Some of them do not have their homes that long. Others have had their homes for quite some time and are on the verge of retirement. They have found themselves in a situation in which their homes are disintegrating around them....

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (7 Jul 2022)

Martin Conway: I, too, I agree with Senator Flynn in that anybody who can attend the debate next Tuesday to voice support should do so. It is what we should be doing here in Seanad Éireann. I look forward to the debate very much. It would be a good idea to have, at some stage in the autumn, an extensive debate on dementia. Like some of my colleagues, I attended the briefing held across the road by...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (30 Jun 2022)

Martin Conway: Today is International Day of Parliamentarism. Our House is more reflective of society than Dáil Éireann. Many initiatives have happened along the way in regard to the gender quota. However, we need a far more diverse Chamber. We need more people with disabilities and more people from ethnic backgrounds in Dáil Éireann.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (30 Jun 2022)

Martin Conway: That is necessary. This House can shine a light in that regard because of its composition. We have much to be proud of but there is also much that we can achieve. We should also strive to do far better. Earlier this month, the Cathaoirleach kindly accepted a Commencement matter that I put down on the pandemic bonus payment to healthcare workers. I am still getting calls from people...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (30 Jun 2022)

Martin Conway: We need a standardised fare structure across the board. I would go so far as to say that students should get free public transport. It would encourage them. It would create a culture of using public transport that would benefit the environment and be better for our communities. We need to have a structured debate on equality of transport, both urban and rural.

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Vaccination Programme (29 Jun 2022)

Martin Conway: I thank the Minister of State for taking this matter. My request is very simple. I ask that all people who are immunocompromised receive the second Covid-19 booster vaccine without delay. I cannot understand why this is not happening. We are told there is no shortage of vaccines. Clearly, it would make sense to vaccinate the most vulnerable in society. Someone with type 1 diabetes is in...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Vaccination Programme (29 Jun 2022)

Martin Conway: I thank the Minister of State for the reply. I would give NIAC nine out of ten rather than ten out of ten because it was slow off the mark in coming out with recommendations before Christmas of last year. It is just slow in making recommendations. The dogs in the street know what is ultimately going to happen and yet recommendations take forever to come out. It can be very frustrating....

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Vaccination Programme (29 Jun 2022)

Martin Conway: I appreciate that. I thank the Minister of State.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (29 Jun 2022)

Martin Conway: Yesterday, I met a number of fishermen from Killybegs, County Donegal, with our colleague, Deputy McHugh. We need a debate on the fishing industry, particularly around the issue of licensing, upgrading of equipment and so on. The fishing industry has such potential in this country that is untapped. Clearly, it needs much greater Government support. I would appreciate it if we had that...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Vaginal Mesh Implants: Discussion (29 Jun 2022)

Martin Conway: A couple of the questions I was going to ask have been asked already. I welcome the witnesses and I applaud them for their bravery. It is certainly a horrific situation. Like others, I am relatively new to the consequences of this but it is something that must be dealt with. I will recommend to this committee that we will send a short report to the Minister after this engagement with the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Vaginal Mesh Implants: Discussion (29 Jun 2022)

Martin Conway: Deputy Shortall asked about health insurance covering people going abroad, which is happening in some cases. Are there issues with health insurance covering procedures in this country?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Vaginal Mesh Implants: Discussion (29 Jun 2022)

Martin Conway: Has anybody, anywhere, been successfully treated in resolving this issue?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Vaginal Mesh Implants: Discussion (29 Jun 2022)

Martin Conway: It was successful?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Vaginal Mesh Implants: Discussion (29 Jun 2022)

Martin Conway: We would certainly do our best in that regard.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Vaginal Mesh Implants: Discussion (29 Jun 2022)

Martin Conway: Absolutely. I thank the witnesses very much.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Vaginal Mesh Implants: Discussion (29 Jun 2022)

Martin Conway: I would like to ask Dr. O'Sullivan whether-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Vaginal Mesh Implants: Discussion (29 Jun 2022)

Martin Conway: I just want to ask a question of the doctor.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Vaginal Mesh Implants: Discussion (29 Jun 2022)

Martin Conway: It is a very quick question. We have engaged with the women this morning and we get the impression there seems to be pushback within the medical community towards women who are in horrendous situations exploring options and medical procedures abroad. Is there a certain reluctance or hesitancy among doctors with regard to thinking outside the box in supporting these women?
