Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Forthcoming Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs Council: Discussion with Minister for Social Protection (26 Sep 2012)

Marie Moloney: I will keep to the same subject. It saves the Minister repeating herself when we come in again.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Forthcoming Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs Council: Discussion with Minister for Social Protection (26 Sep 2012)

Marie Moloney: What if we stick to the same subject?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Forthcoming Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs Council: Discussion with Minister for Social Protection (26 Sep 2012)

Marie Moloney: I will be brief because many of my questions were asked earlier. Perhaps the Minister could give us feedback on the success of JobBridge and the internships and whether employers are keeping on the youth who take up JobBridge and internships. A golden opportunity was lost at the time of the census that it did not contain a question on whether a member of the family emigrated. It would...

Marie Moloney: Senator Brennan missed his cue, but he has three minutes before the Minister of State responds if he wishes to avail of them.

Seanad: Homophobic Bullying: Statements (25 Sep 2012)

Seanad: Homophobic Bullying: Statements (25 Sep 2012)

Marie Moloney: The Senator should conclude because the Minister of State must respond.

Seanad: Order of Business (25 Sep 2012)

Marie Moloney: I add my voice to those of others condemning the horrific and callous murder of pensioner Eugene Gillespie. I extend my sincere sympathy to his family. I call on the banks to embark on a publicity campaign to instil confidence in the elderly to keep their savings in the banks. Many of the elderly have been through hard times and, with uncertainty in respect of banks, they are reverting to...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Actuarial Review of the Social Insurance Fund: Discussion (20 Sep 2012)

Marie Moloney: Does 4% entitle a person to a contributory old age pension, a bereavement grant, a widow's or widower's pension and maternity benefit?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Actuarial Review of the Social Insurance Fund: Discussion (20 Sep 2012)

Marie Moloney: The 4% seems to cover an awful lot. We have to jump up to 16%-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Actuarial Review of the Social Insurance Fund: Discussion (20 Sep 2012)

Marie Moloney: From 4%.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Actuarial Review of the Social Insurance Fund: Discussion (20 Sep 2012)

Marie Moloney: And maternity.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Actuarial Review of the Social Insurance Fund: Discussion (20 Sep 2012)

Marie Moloney: I am sorry to return to an issue that has been mentioned previously, but I did not want to interrupt the previous speaker. Illness benefit is paid for two years. I know a person who suffers from leukaemia and is undergoing treatment. That person has come to the end of the two-year period and is faced with a scenario of going on disability allowance or an invalidity pension. The problem is...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Actuarial Review of the Social Insurance Fund: Discussion (20 Sep 2012)

Marie Moloney: They would include people who worked in this country and moved abroad afterwards. There is no idea of what is being paid in that respect?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Actuarial Review of the Social Insurance Fund: Discussion (20 Sep 2012)

Marie Moloney: Surely we have an overall figure for the number of pensions being paid overseas.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Actuarial Review of the Social Insurance Fund: Discussion (20 Sep 2012)

Marie Moloney: Could we examine the area further? If people have moved abroad and are contributing to another country's economy, we would, in effect, be paying a double pension; the people would get a pension from the country in which they live as well as Ireland. If the people in question made contributions here, that is fair enough, but should the rate not be quite reduced?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Actuarial Review of the Social Insurance Fund: Discussion (20 Sep 2012)

Marie Moloney: The people in question would have moved abroad and contributed to another economy. They can use the contributions paid in the other country to supplement the pension from Ireland. Is that correct?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Actuarial Review of the Social Insurance Fund: Discussion (20 Sep 2012)

Marie Moloney: I am just asking that the area be examined. We are looking through a glass darkly at increasing PRSI contributions from employers and employees, which could be detrimental to employment. There are areas that could be considered and we must make some hard decisions. Unfortunately, that is a result of the current economic climate and hard decisions must be made, whether we like it or not.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Actuarial Review of the Social Insurance Fund: Discussion (20 Sep 2012)

Marie Moloney: I have not had time to read the report because I received it by e-mail yesterday morning and it contains 177 pages. I would like to take the time to study it in detail. I will speak from a more practical point of view. Some people were against the changes made to pensions this year and voiced their opposition to them, but I thought it was good because I found that someone who worked for...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Actuarial Review of the Social Insurance Fund: Discussion (20 Sep 2012)
