Self-Employed and the SME Sector: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (22 Apr 2015)

John O'Mahony: I welcome the opportunity to contribute briefly to this debate, which is timely. As stated by previous speakers, while much of the focus in the past three or four years has been on the large multinationals and foreign direct investment that has helped to rescue the country and provide 80,000 new jobs here, there is much that needs to happen under the radar. In my own constituency of Mayo,...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: General Scheme of Road Traffic Bill 2015: Discussion (Resumed) (22 Apr 2015)

John O'Mahony: In terms of the discussion on the Bill last week, the issue of the practical implementation of it for smaller companies was mentioned. Ms Murdock just made reference to a business involving a husband and wife and in that scenario, does the husband test the wife and vice versa? If have just one truck, do I test myself? What is the situation there?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: General Scheme of Road Traffic Bill 2015: Discussion (Resumed) (22 Apr 2015)

John O'Mahony: Yes, but the point was made that truck drivers do their CPC training and in doing that, they are guaranteeing competence and that they understand the rules and regulations and so forth. I am still not convinced about how this can be practically implemented by individuals and small companies in the industry.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: General Scheme of Road Traffic Bill 2015: Discussion (Resumed) (22 Apr 2015)

John O'Mahony: The Bill will now go through the House. In the presentations today and last week the significant need for education was mentioned. The one thing people always need and want is certainty on what they can and cannot do. Illicit drugs and prescription drugs were mentioned. If I have a bad flu and go to the local shop to buy a box of Panadol or Nurofen and to kill it straightaway I take four...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: North-South Interconnector: EirGrid (21 Apr 2015)

John O'Mahony: Looking at the overall report, there appear to be different solutions for different areas of the country. On the North-South interconnector, the perception is that there has not been much consultation and that there has been no change in what has been proposed. That compares to Grid Link in respect of which there is a proposal to use existing infrastructure and Grid West in respect of which...
