Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Credit Servicers Directive: Discussion (13 Dec 2023)

Mattie McGrath: That is interesting. How can judges make decisions when they do not have access to or sight of the mortgage documents? One would think this is a basic request. Surely the deed and mortgage should be available. Mr Honohan's letter, which I sent around, mainly addressed this issue. How is it acceptable? How can they get away with it?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Credit Servicers Directive: Discussion (13 Dec 2023)

Mattie McGrath: Is it part of the culture across the river that lay litigants are frowned upon and are an unwanted species in the courts?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Credit Servicers Directive: Discussion (13 Dec 2023)

Mattie McGrath: Yes, in the banking court.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Credit Servicers Directive: Discussion (13 Dec 2023)

Mattie McGrath: I thank Mr. Honohan for his detailed correspondence about the previous correspondence that he sent out to all Oireachtas Members. Was he disappointed with the response or lack thereof?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Credit Servicers Directive: Discussion (13 Dec 2023)

Mattie McGrath: I really appreciate that; I think most people do. We have all had people knocking on our doors and they do not know where to go. The media's lack of interest was another issue that surprised me. Mr. Honohan took the case yonder to New York. If the Chair will allow me, I would like to know how he was received. What did they think of us over there? Did they think we were a basket case?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Credit Servicers Directive: Discussion (13 Dec 2023)

Mattie McGrath: That is allowed.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Credit Servicers Directive: Discussion (13 Dec 2023)

Mattie McGrath: Have the investors learned anything from Mr. Honohan about the-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Credit Servicers Directive: Discussion (13 Dec 2023)

Mattie McGrath: I accept that answer. I meant from the point of view of where there is uncertainty about the Land Registry in relation to the debts.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Credit Servicers Directive: Discussion (13 Dec 2023)

Mattie McGrath: I have a statement more than a question. Drug dealers and criminals get legal aid. Surely families trying to keep their homes and trying to provide for themselves and their children should be entitled to legal aid.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Credit Servicers Directive: Discussion (13 Dec 2023)

Mattie McGrath: I thank Mr. Honohan very much for all his work. I wish him a happy, holy and peaceful Christmas.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Credit Servicers Directive: Discussion (13 Dec 2023)

Mattie McGrath: We have tried - both the Chairman and the Rural Independent Group, of which I am a member - have tried to bring forward various items of legislation. On behalf of my colleagues and the Irish people, I thank Mr. Honohan from the bottom of our hearts. Mr. Honohan is the only chink of light in the system.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Credit Servicers Directive: Discussion (13 Dec 2023)

Mattie McGrath: Nothing is simple here but how can we rebalance this situation to have a more level and fair playing field for all litigants and for everyone who has a distressed mortgage, for whatever reason?

Appropriation Bill 2023: Second Stage (12 Dec 2023)

Mattie McGrath: I may be sharing time with my colleagues if they arrive. As we know, the Appropriation Bill is pivotal financial legislation. It is on the horizon and carries the weight of Ireland's fiscal decisions. As the end of the year approaches, the legislation serves a dual role, providing legal backing to the 2023 expenditure and authorising the capital carryover of funding from 2023 to 2024....

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (12 Dec 2023)

Mattie McGrath: The Taoiseach's Government has forgotten about the farmers. I have been contacted by numerous farmers from Tipperary, Waterford and all over the country about the sudden, unannounced change by Revenue on the refund of VAT for unregistered farmers. This is a massive change. Farmers have put in huge investment and that is ongoing. It is dependent on getting the VAT back at 23%, which is a...

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (12 Dec 2023)

Mattie McGrath: Not agreed.

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (12 Dec 2023)

Mattie McGrath: I want a debate about IBI, the Independent Broadcasters of Ireland. They came here ten days ago from all over the country. Local radio stations like Tipp FM and Tipperary Mid West Radio in County Tipperary and all over the country-----

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (12 Dec 2023)

Mattie McGrath: Radio Kerry, of course. All of the radio stations do a valuable service. We will probably see €56 million handed over to RTÉ over Christmas. These stations are operating on a shoestring. They are not able to pay proper wages to the excellent staff and presenters they have. This time of year, facing into Christmas, they connect with local people and local stories. If there is...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (12 Dec 2023)

Mattie McGrath: I thank the Taoiseach for that. We accept that a lot of good work is done by Tusla, as mentioned in the Taoiseach's reply, but we cannot allow public bodies like this to go off and carry on all of these improprieties. Ten years on, we are investigating what was done to Maurice McCabe. It is no wonder they do it and get away with it if they are going to get a flag of honour from this House....

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (12 Dec 2023)

Mattie McGrath: Behind closed doors.

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (12 Dec 2023)
