Geraldine Feeney: The Senator is—

Seanad: Cancer Screening Programme: Motion. (19 Feb 2003)

Geraldine Feeney: I welcome the Minister to the House and thank him for giving us of his time. I think I am the first speaker to do so tonight.

Seanad: Cancer Screening Programme: Motion. (19 Feb 2003)

Geraldine Feeney: He did.

Seanad: Private Business. - The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (Charters Amendment) Bill 2002: Second Stage. (12 Feb 2003)

Geraldine Feeney: Like other Senators, I am delighted to be associated with the introduction of this Bill. As Senator Hayes pointed out, it is an historic occasion in that this is the first Private Bill to come before this Seanad. The updating of the legislation was long awaited. The previous wording was slightly antiquated and narrow. The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland has moved into such diversified...

Seanad: Order of Business. (11 Feb 2003)

Geraldine Feeney: I join Senator Terry in calling for the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform to come to the House. There is significant concern at the escalation of juvenile crime and the fact that young people, especially young men, are targeted for beatings. Last week a 72 year old widow in Sligo was jumped on by three young men on her way home from mass. She had nothing in her bag apart from a...

Seanad: Order of Business. (11 Feb 2003)

Geraldine Feeney: No, I am looking for the Minister to take action. If the fabric of society is to be threatened in this way, we are going nowhere.

Seanad: Opticians (Amendment) Bill 2002: Second Stage. (11 Feb 2003)

Geraldine Feeney: I welcome the Minister back to the House. He strikes a balance in bringing the Opticians (Amendment) Bill 2002 before us. As it is much easier to pronounce the word "optician" than "optometrist", I will continue to use the word "optician". I welcome the Bill which provides for a number of matters. First and foremost, it addresses the evolution of this whole branch of the health profession and...

Seanad: Opticians (Amendment) Bill 2002: Second Stage. (11 Feb 2003)

Geraldine Feeney: At 10.30 a.m. tomorrow.

Seanad: Adjournment Matters. - Rail Services. (11 Feb 2003)

Geraldine Feeney: I thank Senator Feighan for sharing his time with me. I am delighted and proud as a Fianna Fáil Senator to acknowledge that the Sligo-Dublin line has received huge investment for line repair and new tracks under Fianna Fáil-led Governments. However, I am also a little sad to have to acknowledge that, while we have a wonderful line and a great track, the carriages and service leave a lot to...

Seanad: Order of Business. (6 Feb 2003)

Geraldine Feeney: I support my colleague, Senator Feighan, but first I acknowledge the vast improvements on the Dublin to Sligo railway line. I am sure Senator Feighan would acknowledge these also. However, there has been a great disimprovement in the service on the line. We no longer have a dining car on the Sligo to Dublin train and will not have one until matters improve radically. I add my support to...

Seanad: Order of Business. (4 Feb 2003)

Geraldine Feeney: Name and shame.

Seanad: Development of Rugby: Motion. (29 Jan 2003)

Geraldine Feeney: I am thrilled to support the motion. Senator O'Rourke, other Members – including Senator Higgins – from the other side of the House and I were happy were happy to be involved in the protest march from Baggot Street to the offices of the IRFU. Without telling Members my age, for the past 23 years I have been proud to be associated with club rugby, school rugby and provincial rugby, at...

Seanad: Order of Business. (18 Dec 2002)

Geraldine Feeney: I support the requests by Senators Henry and Mansergh for a debate on domiciliary deliveries. Home births are becoming increasingly popular and tightened regulatory measures are, therefore, needed. It is unclear to whom domiciliary midwives are answerable and I support the call for a debate on the topic.

Seanad: Domestic Violence (Amendment) Bill, 2002: Second Stage (Resumed). (17 Dec 2002)

Geraldine Feeney: I welcome the Minister of State and compliment him on his speedy response in bringing the Bill before the House. Only two months ago the Supreme Court ruled that section 3(4) of the Domestic Violence Act was unconstitutional. The general public, as well as politicians, have always been too ready to criticise Ministers and their Departments for being slow, particularly with legislation such as...

Seanad: Order of Business. (12 Dec 2002)

Geraldine Feeney: It is not often that we compliment Ministers on their actions. Usually, we want them to address the House or answer questions on their recommendations. The decision of the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform that padded cells are no longer acceptable in our prisons is a huge leap forward for prisoners suffering from mental illness.

Seanad: Order of Business. (12 Dec 2002)

Geraldine Feeney: No longer will they be detained in the horrendous prison cells about which we often hear and which some of us have seen during prison visits. They will now be treated in a more modern, humane way in proper facilities.

Seanad: Order of Business. (12 Dec 2002)

Geraldine Feeney: No, I am complimenting the Minister. I also ask the Leader to ensure the recommendations are implemented.

Seanad: Alcohol Consumption by Young People: Statements. (11 Dec 2002)

Geraldine Feeney: I welcome the Minister of State to the House and thank him for spending time with us. I regret that his colleague, the Minister of State, Deputy Tom Kitt, has left. I remember in his previous ministry when he regulated consumer affairs that he described alcopops as insidious concoctions and introduced a regulation requiring them to be displayed alongside alcoholic drinks in bars, supermarkets...

Seanad: Alcohol Consumption by Young People: Statements. (11 Dec 2002)

Geraldine Feeney: Roy Keane had gone home.

Seanad: Order of Business. (27 Nov 2002)

Geraldine Feeney: The Leader should seek clarification, and perhaps even correction, from the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment and the Attorney General on the insurance issue that is currently being debated on the "Today with Pat Kenny" show on RTÉ Radio One. We now find that an anti-terrorism clause has been included in domestic insurance policies. It would appear that members of certain...
