Kieran O'Donnell: Would the Minister accept that the greater majority of passengers being carried by Bus Éireann on the Expressway routes are using a free travel pass?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Éireann: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Mar 2017)
Kieran O'Donnell: If I could just finish my very quick point, that the greater majority of passengers travelling on the Bus Éireann Expressway routes are people with free travel passes and by definition, then, Bus Éireann cannot make a profit on those routes. Its losses are artificially inflated. Does the Minister accept that point?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Éireann: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Mar 2017)
Kieran O'Donnell: Are the Expressway routes being looked at as part of that review?
- Seanad: Order of Business (1 Mar 2017)
Kieran O'Donnell: As we speak, the Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment is launching, in conjunction with the Irish Coalition 2030 group, a document on air pollution and cleaning our air. I ask the Leader to invite the Minister to debate this issue in the House as soon as possible. This is an issue of particular concern to me in the context of the Irish Cement plant in Castlemungret,...
- Seanad: Order of Business (28 Feb 2017)
Kieran O'Donnell: Like everyone else, I wish to pay my respects to the late Peter Mathews. I first got to know Peter before he became a politician. He was, to a certain extent, some would say, ploughing a lonely furrow back in 2008 and 2009 when he was saying the banks were in serious trouble. History has shown he was correct. Peter was a combination of a real gentleman, a decent man and a persistent man...

Kieran O'Donnell: Like a horse returning to the stable.
- Seanad: Order of Business (23 Feb 2017)
Kieran O'Donnell: It is welcome that Norwegian Air International will operate two new flights out of Shannon Airport from 1 July to Boston and New York. Shannon Airport provides a fantastic service. I encourage people in Dublin and elsewhere who face chaotic volumes of traffic in getting to Dublin Airport to come down the duel carriageway to Shannon Airport as it is a far better experience. I want to bring...

Kieran O'Donnell: I welcome the Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Deputy Joe McHugh, and invite him to make his opening statement.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Quarterly Update on Health Issues: Discussion (22 Feb 2017)
Kieran O'Donnell: I thank the Chairman for facilitating me as a non-member. I have two items to bring up, one of which is specific to Limerick and one of which is general. My question on Limerick refers to the new state-of-the-art accident and emergency department at University Hospital Limerick and is directed to Mr. O'Brien and Mr. Woods of the HSE and to the Minister. A commitment was given that the new...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Quarterly Update on Health Issues: Discussion (22 Feb 2017)
Kieran O'Donnell: I apologise. The Minister might give an indication as to where Orkambi is at and set out the timeframe. Modern medicine makes a difference. I understand the discussions with the drug company and am not going there, but it is important to get some sort of clarity around the area. I want a commitment today to the new accident and emergency department in Limerick. If it is ready to be...

Kieran O'Donnell: If it is ready in May, will it be funded to be opened in May?
- Seanad: Commencement Matters: Schools Building Projects (22 Feb 2017)
Kieran O'Donnell: I thank the Minister, Deputy Richard Bruton, for attending to address this matter which is extremely important to Monaleen national school, Castletroy. I live in Monaleen where my four children went to school. There has, however, been an ongoing problem with overcrowding in Monaleen national school which has over 850 students and the enrolment is growing. It will probably reach 900 next...
- Seanad: Commencement Matters: Schools Building Projects (22 Feb 2017)
Kieran O'Donnell: I welcome the Minister's reply which contains positive news for Monaleen national school. As there are many families with young children in the area, it is welcome that the brief formulation report is being completed. In addition, the Minister is seeking to expedite the project to architectural planning phase as quickly possible. The project is being prioritised by the Department. I thank...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Situation in Bus Éireann: Discussion (22 Feb 2017)
Kieran O'Donnell: I am not a member of the committee so I thank the Chairman for allowing me to speak. This is something in which I have taken a particular interest. I am based in Limerick city and I will deal with a microcosm that reflects the issue, particularly the Bus Éireann routes. There are numerous operators on the Limerick to Dublin route, with one being Bus Éireann. I will deal with one...
