Eoghan Murphy: Yes, but it is almost twice the cost to the State. If a child attends a fee-paying school, the funding provided by the State per child is half the amount it gives to a child attending a non-fee-paying school.

Eoghan Murphy: The State covers some but not all of the teaching costs, but essentially funding goes towards paying teachers in schools. Mr. Ó Foghlú said we will see the report in the next few weeks and it will cover all of those issues.

Eoghan Murphy: One can see the natural bias, of course, and it is understandable where there is a person out sick and the principal knows that the person who retired was good with staff and pupils. Does the Department track how many people are coming back for longer periods of time?

The issue has been raised at meetings of this committee before.
