- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Annual Report 2013: National Milk Agency (25 Nov 2014)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I wish to return to a question I asked earlier about price. Let us be honest about it, the supermarkets control the world with regard to beef, vegetables, milk and everything else. That is a big concern in the European Union and it is an issue we must tackle at EU level. Otherwise, they could destroy all European farming. They can play any game they wish because five of them in different...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Annual Report 2013: National Milk Agency (25 Nov 2014)
Éamon Ó Cuív: They are not double and treble the price of one litre. In the farmer's favour, again, when he receives a certain price for the milk, there is cream in the milk. My understanding is that there is no cream in the milk any more, particularly in low-fat milk. The processor has the cream and can sell it at a high price. How comparable are the figures after all the pluses and minuses are taken...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Annual Report 2013: National Milk Agency (25 Nov 2014)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Page 16 of the annual report details the percentage paid to the farmer. There is a sudden jump from whole milk to low-fat milk, with the percentage going to the farmer shooting up accordingly. The research examined 1 litre packs, but I imagine a small minority of milk is sold in 1 litre packs. Packs of 3 litres are becoming popular, but such packs and 2 litre packs would dominate the...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Annual Report 2013: National Milk Agency (25 Nov 2014)
Éamon Ó Cuív: That is fair enough. That answers my question.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Annual Report 2013: National Milk Agency (25 Nov 2014)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I welcome Mr. Denis Murphy and An Dr. Muiris Ó Céidigh anseo tráthnóna. I always find their reports very informative, clear and useful. Dr. Ó Céidigh said in his presentation that the manufacturing price was now within 0.8 cent per litre of the liquid milk price. The question I have on price - allowing for a likely volatility in the market which has been...

- Water Sector Reforms: Motion (Resumed) (19 Nov 2014)
Éamon Ó Cuív: There will be a net contribution of between minus €20 for a single dwelling house and plus €30 in rural Ireland. Am I correct?
- Water Sector Reforms: Motion (Resumed) (19 Nov 2014)
Éamon Ó Cuív: We are trying to be constructive tonight. When one tries to be constructive around here, one gets into trouble. The Ministers of State were trying to be helpful to me. We would not like to make a mistake. I think by the nodding heads, my sums are right. These 500,000 houses will yield damn all to the Exchequer. However, to get this null or minor sum will require a huge amount of...
- Water Sector Reforms: Motion (Resumed) (19 Nov 2014)
Éamon Ó Cuív: What is the gain here in that case? What are we getting out of this apart from one thing that always happens. I am willing to admit I saw it happen when we were in government. There is a thinking in officialdom, which will wait 50 years to get its way eventually. I see it doing things with this Government that were tried a few times with me, although I said "No". Officialdom will keep...
- Water Sector Reforms: Motion (Resumed) (19 Nov 2014)
Éamon Ó Cuív: We need to examine the facts in a calm way. I am disappointed that the Minister is leaving, but so be it. I often wonder does anyone listen in this House. I have made comment previously to the effect that it would be almost as well to put the contributions up on the web and not bother coming to the House in order that we could save ourselves a good deal of time. If the Dáil is to...
- Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Select Sub-Committee on Finance: Finance Bill 2014: Committee Stage (Resumed) (19 Nov 2014)
Éamon Ó Cuív: It refers to an "individual's normal working" week. It does not refer to "a normal working" week. People use certain wording for a reason. If this referred to "50% of a normal working week", I would see it as being specifically 20 hours. The Bill refers to an individual's "normal working time".
- Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Select Sub-Committee on Finance: Finance Bill 2014: Committee Stage (Resumed) (19 Nov 2014)
Éamon Ó Cuív: If an individual's normal working week is more than 40 hours, it would appear to have an effect.
- Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Select Sub-Committee on Finance: Finance Bill 2014: Committee Stage (Resumed) (19 Nov 2014)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I would have to be in two places. It is unfortunate that this is happening at the same time as the major announcement on water.
