Joe O'Toole: Let us have the debate.
- Seanad: Order of Business (19 Nov 2008)
Joe O'Toole: We asked the Leader yesterday, last week and the previous week to deliver on his promise to have regular discussions on the economy which were to take place not less often than once a month. We are still waiting for that debate. This should not be taking up time on the Order of Business but issues arise. The Government is addressing a matter that is all over the newspapers and is of...
- Seanad: Order of Business (19 Nov 2008)
Joe O'Toole: Hear, hear.
- Seanad: Death of Member: Expressions of Sympathy (18 Nov 2008)
Joe O'Toole: It is my privilege on behalf of the Independent benches chun cúpla focal molta agus cuimhneacháin a rá mar gheall ar fhear a thug a shaol ar son réimse polaitÃochta na tÃre seo. Is mór an phribhléid dom ómós a thabhairt d'fhear a bhà i gconaà ag obair chun aidhmeanna polaitÃochta na tÃre a chur chun cinn. Is mór an trua é gur tógadh uainn Séamus agus é chomh hóg. I first...
- Seanad: Order of Business (18 Nov 2008)
Joe O'Toole: I am also disappointed that we are not addressing certain issues. Three weeks ago, the Leader gave me a commitment that he would arrange a debate on education. He said it would be done without a problem. It has not happened, however. During the same week, he assured us that the House would discuss the economy at least once a month. Such debates are not taking place. The discussions in...

Joe O'Toole: On a point of order, could I indicate to Senator Regan that it is a convention of the House that if something is to be quoted from, it is indicated immediately to the Cathaoirleach?

Joe O'Toole: That is the old fashioned spring.
- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Nov 2008)
Joe O'Toole: I concur with much of what Senator Fitzgerald has just said. On the Order of Business yesterday, I referred to the lack of business in the House at present. This was raised by my colleagues and by Senator Fitzgerald on the preceding day. Let us be absolutely clear that I believe the Government is winding down the importance of this House.
- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Nov 2008)
Joe O'Toole: It is trying to reduce to a minimum the impact of debate in the House and to undermine us in what we are doing. A classic issue arose yesterday. When we mentioned the lack of legislation in the House, we received a response from the Government side on the important issues that were being debated. That was not the issue at all and we should therefore park that idea. Everybody on this side...

Joe O'Toole: Did Senator Carty believe him?

Joe O'Toole: Senator Carty is a soft man.
- Seanad: Irish Agriculture: Motion (12 Nov 2008)
Joe O'Toole: I am happy to wait until the Minister of State has spoken. Más mian leis an Aire caint anois, away leis.
- Seanad: Irish Agriculture: Motion (12 Nov 2008)
Joe O'Toole: Ar aghaidh leat mar sin.
- Seanad: Irish Agriculture: Motion (12 Nov 2008)
Joe O'Toole: We are very co-operative on this side.
- Seanad: Irish Agriculture: Motion (12 Nov 2008)
Joe O'Toole: Go raibh mÃle maith agat a Aire as an méid sin ach caithfidh mé a rá nach raibh morán ann chun dóchas a thabhairt d'fheirmeoirà na tÃre i ndáirÃre. Tá cúpla rud sa mhéid a dúirt an tAire atá tábhachtach agus tiocfaidh mé ar ais chucu go luath. I begin by congratulating Senators Bradford and John Paul Phelan on tabling this excellent and timely motion. I feel sorry for my...
- Seanad: Irish Agriculture: Motion (12 Nov 2008)
Joe O'Toole: I support this motion. I urge my friends on the Government side of the House to think again before voting against a superb vindication of Irish agriculture and farmers and the support to which they are entitled. We should stand with them and invest in agriculture rather than cutting back.
- Seanad: Irish Agriculture: Motion (12 Nov 2008)
Joe O'Toole: The Minister of State's speech had even less to do with this debate. We learned that one a long time ago.
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Nov 2008)
Joe O'Toole: I reiterate the point made yesterday on the lack of legislation in the House this week. If that is to continue, we should be allowed additional Private Members' time.
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Nov 2008)
Joe O'Toole: We can certainly raise issues for debate in the House. The acting leader of the Opposition stated we could be discussing today positive proposals on the legislative changes required to deal with the Limerick issue and others. We can certainly do that. If business is so light in the Seanad with no legislation coming through, we should look to this side of the House for matters for...
