Public Accounts Committee: Special Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General on the Nursing Homes Support Scheme: Discussion (1 Oct 2020)

Brian Stanley: I would appreciate that because it is a real issue. It was a real issue four or five years ago and then it was pushed out to 2021. It will have implications for nursing homes such as those in Abbeyleix and Mountmellick. On the component costs, they incorporate what are referred to as additional services in private nursing homes. There is an issue around access to allied staff in public...

Public Accounts Committee: Special Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General on the Nursing Homes Support Scheme: Discussion (1 Oct 2020)

Brian Stanley: I also raised the issue of patients having to pay for access to the therapies. A patient in a private nursing home who may be of limited means may have to pay for the therapies whereas the services are available to those in public nursing homes, which have allied staff who provide physiotherapy, occupational therapy and chiropody. That is a serious issue.

Public Accounts Committee: Special Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General on the Nursing Homes Support Scheme: Discussion (1 Oct 2020)

Brian Stanley: We are up against the finishing line, unfortunately, but I would appreciate a reply in relation to the estimated reduction in capacity. The number of elderly people in the country is increasing. If the regulations result in a reduction in capacity of 35% by 2030, that will have huge implications for nursing homes and the care of the elderly. We need to be on top of that.

I sincerely wish them the very best in dealing with the unprecedented challenges in the months ahead. We experienced the effects of some of those challenges today with the technology and our apologies for that. We will seek...

Brian Stanley: 224. To ask the Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection the number of persons in each county that engaged with JobPath in each year since it began; and the number whose employment was sustained for more than 12 months in each county. [28070/20]

Forestry (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2020 [Seanad]: Second Stage (Resumed) (30 Sep 2020)

Brian Stanley: There is a crisis in the forestry sector and it needs to be urgently addressed. This is an industry in which thousands of jobs are at risk in rural areas where there is little or no alternative employment. In Laois-Offaly alone, for example, almost 100 workers are reliant, either directly or indirectly, on the forestry sector in timber production, sawmills and so on. Some of these workers...

Brian Stanley: Agreed. No. 2700C is from an individual in regard to the wards of court. I understand that the previous committee had decided that it had taken its consideration of the matter as far as it could. I note Deputy Catherine Murphy wishes to address this issue.
