Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Impact of Trade Deals on Agriculture: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (24 Sep 2025)

Paul Lawless: I thank the Department officials for coming in. I wish Sinéad McPhillips all the best in her new job. I look forward to working with her over the years ahead. I am totally opposed to the Mercosur trade deal. It is incredible really. It has been a masterclass in political doublespeak from the European Union in many ways. Over the last hour we have been talking about the nitrates...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Impact of Trade Deals on Agriculture: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (24 Sep 2025)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food: Impact of Trade Deals on Agriculture: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (24 Sep 2025)

Paul Lawless: Farmers are going to be hurt significantly by this deal, especially beef farmers. What analysis has been done? Analysis was done, as Ms McPhillips mentioned, on the potential reduction of beef prices in Ireland. Who are the beneficiaries of this deal? Has there been analysis done on German and French car manufacturing? By what percentage of sales are they due to benefit from the deal?

To ask the Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection if he has reviewed the current eligibility criteria for the back-to-school clothing and footwear allowance, in light of concerns raised regarding foster families; if he will now consider removing the means test requirement including the need to be in receipt of a qualifying social welfare payment for foster carers, to...

Written Answers — Department of Health: Hospital Services (23 Sep 2025)

Paul Lawless: 660. To ask the Minister for Health the reason several persons whose routine mammograms are due, have not received appointments in Galway following the postponement of mammography services at Mayo University Hospital; the reason they have had to actively seek out these appointments themselves; the interim arrangements in place to ensure timely access to breast cancer screening for affected...

Antisocial Behaviour: Motion [Private Members] (18 Sep 2025)

Paul Lawless: I very much welcome the motion brought forward by my colleague Deputy Paul Gogarty. In recent weeks, the new Commissioner has taken office. It is really important to say that the previous Commissioner left the morale of the force in tatters. This is why the Minister for justice, Deputy O'Callaghan, now has a major job at hand in recruitment and retention in the force. I believe the first...

Migration: Statements (18 Sep 2025)

Paul Lawless: The population is now more than 5.4 million. Last year, over 25,000 immigrants arrived into this country. That is a net figure of more than 60,000 people. In one year, that is equates to the population of Sligo, Ennis and Castlebar. Yet, this Government has failed to deliver the necessary infrastructure to sustain that level of development. Over the past five years, just over 100,000...

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (18 Sep 2025)

Paul Lawless: I wish to raise real concerns about Mayo University Hospital. The Minister for Health will know that last month the hospital was in a crisis situation, experiencing over 160 presentations daily despite the fact that just four or five nurses were rostered on a given day. This month we are way off peak in terms of the winter period but Mayo University Hospital has been forced to cancel...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Recycling Policy (18 Sep 2025)

Paul Lawless: It is over €66 million of unclaimed items in one year. The Minister of State has talked about controls. I have asked him how much the CEO is getting paid and what the salaries in this organisation are. That is the level of control I expect him to declare before us in the Dáil. It is unacceptable that he talks simply about the environmental aspect without addressing the issue...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Recycling Policy (18 Sep 2025)

Paul Lawless: Has the DRS been a success? I am not just asking about the environmental aspect but about the financials behind company, the percentage of unclaimed deposits and where that money has gone and the impact will the scheme have on families right across Ireland who may well experience higher bin collection fees as a result of the DRS.
