Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Provision of Bus Services in Dublin: Discussion (8 Nov 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: .... What is the NTA's role in that? This issue is not just about Dublin. I accept, however, that this meeting relates to Dublin. I hope we can come back to the matter in terms of BusConnects in Cork. I thank the NTA in that regard. I will not delay the meeting. I have a document that I will give to each organisation. I thank representatives for being here. I ask them to express my...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (26 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: ...will not call her out because she might be embarrassed but she knows who she is. They are very welcome. I commend the Christ the King transition year students here. It is a tremendous school in Cork and we are lucky to have a school of that calibre in our city. I am glad the young women are here today because I want to raise the issue of LGBT rights in Afghanistan. Yesterday, Deputy...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (25 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: ...sanctioned in the budget and empowering special schools to enable them to have home school liaison for those students and families who require it the most. I have met with groups of teachers from Cork who are part of the special schools provision in the city.It is important that the Cork special schools principals group is supported not just by words in the Seanad but by action from all...

Seanad: Seanad Electoral (University Members) (Amendment) Bill 2020: Second Stage (Resumed) (20 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: ...this extension of the franchise. It would be appropriate to have the Bill passed, given that we have seen a whole new suite of technological universities established, in particular Munster Technological University, MTU, in Cork. As Senator O'Loughlin said, it is wrong that we differentiate between graduates in their being allowed this franchise as part of the Seanad election process. We...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: ...for a debate on the new national forestry programme. I appreciate the work being done by her to date but I come from a county where forestry is very important. We have three major sawmills in Cork and a huge industry is associated with forestry. It is underappreciated in terms of its influence and importance in the local economy. Senator Boyhan is correct in that we had a good briefing...

Seanad: VAT Rate for Tourism and Hospitality Sectors: Statements (Resumed) (19 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: ...as a member of the labour panel. I have called for a debate on work and the nature of work in a new modern Ireland and how work has evolved. We are at near full employment but if we walk around our capital, Cork city or any part of Ireland there are signs in multiple places looking for staff. This is something we need to address as a Government and as a society. I welcome the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Coach Sector: Discussion (19 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: I thank Mr. David O'Brien of Cork Coach Hire who has been in constant contact with me for his advocacy on behalf of the industry. I also thank the representatives for being here today and for what they are doing. I apologise for being in and out. The evidence we have had today is important and the representatives provide a considerable service both to the State and many sporting and...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Coach Sector: Discussion (19 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: ...Members will have heard me make reference to two points at a number of meetings. I do not understand the rationale for why there is a speed van as you head eastbound into the Jack Lynch tunnel in Cork. The second issue is in coming out of the tunnel heading westbound. Here is where I have a fundamental difficulty. I hope that after this meeting the witnesses will have a discussion...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (12 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: ...before the relevant consultants are approved and appointed in our hospitals. As part of the debate, I ask that the Minister for Health answer questions pertaining to the new elective hospital for Cork. I want to commend my colleague, Deputy Colm Burke, on his work on this. It is a bit disappointing that as we come towards the end of the tenure of the Taoiseach we do not have the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with Road Safety Authority (12 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: .... It is important that our witnesses recognise that, within the whole NCT and licence area, there is concern, angst, worry and hardship, as has been articulated by all of the members. I am from Cork, like Deputy O'Connor. We in the Oireachtas have been inundated with requests. At this juncture, I thank the customer service team in the RSA and those in the driving licence section and...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with Road Safety Authority (12 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: I want to put on record my complete support for the Road Safety Authority and An Garda Síochána. I was vocal at the recent meeting of the Cork city joint policing committee with regard to GoSafe vans. Surely the positioning of GoSafe vans should be about saving lives and not about being a potential cash cow for An Garda Síochána or the RSA

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with Road Safety Authority (12 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: ...condone bad driving behaviour. My comments, first and foremost, are about ensuring we locate the GoSafe vans or the Garda speeding presence in the right locations. I drive to Dublin and back to Cork most weeks and the safest I feel on the road is when on the motorway. I counted one Tuesday between leaving my house in Cork and arriving in Leinster House four speed checkpoints on the way...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with Road Safety Authority (12 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: I should put this in the context of a number of locations and I will give two examples. One of these is the tunnel in Cork and the N40 heading eastbound towards the Dublin road. Is Mr. Waide familiar with this?

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Early Childhood Care and Education (6 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: ...present is responsible for many aspects of their lives. The issue I am raising is to do with young children, specifically, the pre-school in the Morning Star National School, Ballyphenane, County Cork, and the fact the pre-school has not be reopened. I thank the Minister for being here. It is a testament to the importance of this issue that he is here. I accept it is not the Minister's...

Seanad: Road Traffic and Roads Bill 2021: Second Stage (6 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: ...I see on our roads in many parts of the country. We must support the RSA and the new road strategy. We cannot compromise on safety on our roads. At the joint policing committee meeting in Cork last Friday, the issue of scramblers was raised. I welcome the fact that we will target the antisocial use of scramblers. As we all know, it is not just about a certain part of the country; it...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Recent Issues Concerning Aer Lingus Flight Booking and Check-in Services: Discussion (5 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: Unfortunately, it is not. I wish Aer Lingus flew out of Cork. That is the honest answer. In her opening statement, Ms Embleton made reference to the issues of the construction works, the Internet service provider and the supplier. Has the construction contractor or any of the entities been named during the meeting? I missed part of the meeting.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Recent Issues Concerning Aer Lingus Flight Booking and Check-in Services: Discussion (5 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: ...to take ownership, which it has, and also have accountability on the other side. I thank Mr. Moriarty. I am a bit confused, and I know I am probably in a small dilemma given that I am from Cork, when I hear Ms Embleton, Mr. Moriarty, Ms Carberry and Mr. O'Neill speak about Aer Lingus having a good summer and that it is looking to grow and wants to grow. I have a genuine question....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Recent Issues Concerning Aer Lingus Flight Booking and Check-in Services: Discussion (5 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: Aer Lingus's winter schedule out of Cork does not reflect this.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Recent Issues Concerning Aer Lingus Flight Booking and Check-in Services: Discussion (5 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: ...of regional airports. I do not see them as being considered important. Mr. Moriarty is far more competent and knowledgeable than I am but as a lay person who is a public representative from Cork and the Munster region, I have to question Aer Lingus's commitment to airports outside of Dublin. I ask Mr. Moriarty to argue with me please.
