Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Business of Joint Committee (26 Jun 2019)

Catherine Murphy: The review is likely to be completed within six or eight weeks. It is disappointing that the focus of the review’s attention appears to be on where the leak came from, rather than the substance of the issue, which is part of what we want to speak to them about. What exactly is being reviewed? Is it the substance of the issue around the credit card and the use of it or is it...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Business of Joint Committee (26 Jun 2019)

Catherine Murphy: An issue was recently brought to my attention which the Department might clarify. There is a fifth freedom in air navigation regulations for airline operators from outside of the EU when dealing with origin-destination issues. There appears to be one route that we have given permission for, namely, a Dublin-Madrid route operated by Ethiopian Airlines. I will give the clerk the details and...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Accessibility of Public Transport for People with Disabilities: Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport (26 Jun 2019)

Catherine Murphy: I thank the Minister for his update. Even if one only looked back 20 years one would see that progress has been made. However, he is right that an awful lot still needs to be done. We must not go backwards either. I mean that when a new fleet is being purchased, it must be of the optimum standard. It is welcome that the specification is being developed for the DART fleet. I understood...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Accessibility of Public Transport for People with Disabilities: Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport (26 Jun 2019)

Catherine Murphy: The DART fleet.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Accessibility of Public Transport for People with Disabilities: Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport (26 Jun 2019)

Catherine Murphy: Earlier the Minister mentioned that this is "the best platform interface solution". When I read that phrase I had to re-read it because I did not know what it meant. I ask him to decipher the term so we know exactly what is being talked about. Is the DART fleet on order? Was the specification done in advance of the order being placed? Was the specification provided within that or how has...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Accessibility of Public Transport for People with Disabilities: Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport (26 Jun 2019)

Catherine Murphy: Will the Minister come back to us on the matter? It would be very useful to know.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Accessibility of Public Transport for People with Disabilities: Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport (26 Jun 2019)

Catherine Murphy: Okay.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Accessibility of Public Transport for People with Disabilities: Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport (26 Jun 2019)

Catherine Murphy: No, but it is one of the issues that has come up here repeatedly.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Accessibility of Public Transport for People with Disabilities: Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport (26 Jun 2019)

Catherine Murphy: The problem is people cannot get on buses. If the space available on a bus for a wheelchair is being used, another person in a wheelchair waiting at a bus stop may not be allowed on.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Accessibility of Public Transport for People with Disabilities: Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport (26 Jun 2019)

Catherine Murphy: I have suggested we invite the transport disability manager to come before the committee in six months time. I would like a note to be taken of this suggestion in order that we can place it in an appropriate place in the work programme.

Summer Economic Statement 2019: Statements (25 Jun 2019)

Catherine Murphy: I welcome the opportunity to speak to the summer economic statement. We were presented with black and white options for several scenarios. The one with the United Kingdom crashing out of the European Union is pretty dire, not just for next year’s but for subsequent years’ budgets. The loss of 50,000 jobs in such a scenario is conceivable. Social welfare payments and tax...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (25 Jun 2019)

Catherine Murphy: Part of the reason for the unavailability of rented accommodation is the predominance of Airbnb accommodation. Houses that used to be rented are now occupied by people on that basis. The recent report on house prices in Dublin showed the average price of a three-bedroom house is €433,000, which is many multiples of the average industrial income. Rebuilding Ireland has missed its...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (25 Jun 2019)

Catherine Murphy: Today all of the attention will be on two budget options and whether the Government will opt for budget A or budget B in the autumn. Regardless of which budget is presented, we cannot afford any more wasteful spending as a result of particularly poor economic decisions. Unfortunately, disastrous economic decisions continue to be made. It is no longer news that we are in the grip of a...
