- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Credit Union Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (16 Dec 2015)
Michael Creed: Is it not the case that credit unions have strayed from the category of core lending, their original raison d'être? Core lending in all financial institutions in the period since 2007 has been on a downward trajectory. People have been repairing their domestic balance sheets and have not been in a position to borrow, rather they have been repaying loans, which is the reason deposits in...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Credit Union Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (16 Dec 2015)
Michael Creed: How can the community ethos be protected in the context of restructuring or rationalisation? How can the registrar protect the community ethos in terms of the reach of the credit union movement into the communities that I represent and yet have fewer credit unions? Ms McKiernan referred to there being a current loan arrears figure of 13.5% and, in some instances, up to 30%. Is there a...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Credit Union Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (16 Dec 2015)
Michael Creed: Ms McKiernan spoke about the requirements of modern day financial systems and the credit union movement being ill-equipped to meet them, but it has been alleged to us that the Central Bank drags its feet, even in facilitating those credit unions that want to move towards the use of new technology, different platforms and so on. Would she care to comment on this?

Michael Creed: I thank the delegations for the presentations which have been most interesting. There is a debate in the Dáil tonight and there are parallel debates going on between the credit union sector and the Department. I hope we can collectively aim for an end game which involves something that is workable for everybody, not least the punter out there who puts his or her money in trust with the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Credit Union Sector: Discussion (25 Nov 2015)

Half of the credit unions have individual deposit holders and the other half do not and are unaffected. Of the half that are affected, what percentage of their total deposits are in accounts of more than €100,000?
