Seanad: Civil Liability (Amendment) Bill 2017: [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil] Report and Final Stages (15 Nov 2017)

Lorraine Clifford Lee: I thank the Minister for attending for the passage of this important legislation. As a practising solicitor, I can see the merit in it. It was about time something like this was provided for. Quite often, lump sum payments are made and do not have an actual benefit for the claimant. This is an absolute travesty and we have corrected that this evening. I thank the Minister for...

Seanad: International Protection (Family Reunification) (Amendment) Bill 2017: Committee Stage (Resumed) (8 Nov 2017)

Lorraine Clifford Lee: I would also like to extend a very warm welcome to Deputy Nolan and his delegation. Like my colleagues, I would like to congratulate Senator Kelleher on this Bill. She has our support and she has our support for the amendment. It is excellent that Senator Kelleher has put so much work into this Bill and it is very much appreciated. The Bill is supported by my group. It addresses the...

Seanad: Commencement Matters: Schools Building Projects Status (26 Oct 2017)

Lorraine Clifford Lee: St. Molaga's national school in Balbriggan has 463 pupils. Balbriggan is the fastest growing town in Ireland and it has the youngest population in the State. Since 2000, the school has been accommodated in 16 prefabricated buildings because of its growing population. They were to have been a temporary solution, but 17 years later they are still there. Three extra classrooms are needed...

Seanad: Commencement Matters: Schools Building Projects Status (26 Oct 2017)

Lorraine Clifford Lee: I thank the Minister of State for his reply. Before I start, I wish to acknowledge the presence of Debbie Lynch and Sineád Creamer who are seated in the Gallery. They are parents who have children attending the school and are very involved in this project. St. Molaga's school has educated generations of children in Balbriggan. The school has built up a great history and culture. It...

Seanad: Commencement Matters: Schools Building Projects Status (26 Oct 2017)

Lorraine Clifford Lee: The Minister of State has said that the school can submit an application if there is an immediate need. The people concerned do not want a temporary solution. They got a temporary solution 17 years ago and now need a permanent solution.

Seanad: Criminal Justice (Victims of Crime) Bill 2017: Motion (26 Oct 2017)

Lorraine Clifford Lee: I echo the sentiments expressed by Senator Boyhan. I am disappointed this amendment has now been accepted. However, the Fianna Fáil group is eager that this Bill is enacted and, therefore, we are willing to support it in its current form. It is definitely a step forward for victims of crime, which all of us would welcome, and I wish the Minister of State the best of luck with it.

Seanad: Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission (Gender Pay Gap Information) Bill: Committee Stage (25 Oct 2017)

Lorraine Clifford Lee: I wish to reiterate Fianna Fáil's support for the Bill as well as my personal support. I am delighted to be here. I missed the Second Stage because it was held on 24 May and my little boy was born on 22 May. That is why I was not here to voice my support.

Seanad: Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission (Gender Pay Gap Information) Bill: Committee Stage (25 Oct 2017)

Lorraine Clifford Lee: I was back soon after that, but not quite two days later. The Bill is welcome. Senator Kelleher touched on an important point. We need to diagnose the problem first. Sometimes, when I speak about the gender pay gap with people, they seem to think that it does not exist, that it is some kind of figment of our imagination or that it is not actually happening. However, it is happening....

Seanad: Order of Business (24 Oct 2017)

Lorraine Clifford Lee: I wish to raise the pyrite issue and to ask the Leader to invite the Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government, Deputy Eoghan Murphy, to the House to discuss it. More than 20,000 houses in Ireland have been contaminated with pyrite. Many of them are in north County Dublin but they are also spread across the country, including some in County Mayo. The pyrite remediation scheme has...

Seanad: Order of Business (18 Oct 2017)

Lorraine Clifford Lee: We all did plenty-----

Seanad: Order of Business (18 Oct 2017)

Lorraine Clifford Lee: Our leader was actually to the forefront of the marriage equality campaign. I do not believe that the then Taoiseach, Deputy Enda Kenny, was anywhere to be seen on that campaign.
