Seanad: Water Services (Amendment) Bill 2011: Second Stage (Resumed) (16 Nov 2011)

Ned O'Sullivan: I should have been called, as I was present and my name was on the list.

Seanad: Water Services (Amendment) Bill 2011: Second Stage (Resumed) (16 Nov 2011)

Ned O'Sullivan: With the greatest of respect to the Acting Chairman, I remained in the Press Gallery while a quorum was being sought. I was in my seat before she asked the Minister to speak.

Ned O'Sullivan: My name was on the list.

Seanad: Water Services (Amendment) Bill 2011: Second Stage (Resumed) (16 Nov 2011)

Ned O'Sullivan: I was present.

Seanad: Water Services (Amendment) Bill 2011: Second Stage (Resumed) (16 Nov 2011)

Ned O'Sullivan: On a point of order, I was here.

Seanad: Water Services (Amendment) Bill 2011: Second Stage (Resumed) (16 Nov 2011)

Ned O'Sullivan: I will not accept what the Acting Chairman said. With the greatest of respect to the Minister, whom I respect, I have never been as agitated in making a point of order since I was first elected to the House. Am I invisible? I remained in the Press Gallery in order that it would be convenient for a recall. I was sitting in my chair before the Acting Chairman addressed the Chamber. I am...

Seanad: Water Services (Amendment) Bill 2011: Second Stage (Resumed) (16 Nov 2011)

Ned O'Sullivan: I, too, totally respect the Cathaoirleach's judgment on this and I totally accept that the Acting Chair did not act in any biased way. However, Members on the other side of the House are saying I was not in the Chamber. I was in the Chamber before the Acting Chair resumed business. That is it.

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Nov 2011)

Ned O'Sullivan: I support Senator Sheahan's call for a debate on the suggestion that the first four weeks of sick pay should be met by employers, rather than by the Department of Social Protection, which is the statusquo. It is an outrageous suggestion. Last week, I spoke in the Chamber about the problems facing small businesses which are trying to retain their staff and this idea appears to be a double...

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Nov 2011)

Ned O'Sullivan: It is the most cynical action and the manner in which he now is explaining it already with weasel words to the effect that he signed on behalf of the Labour Party and not on behalf of the Government is even more contemptible.

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Nov 2011)

Ned O'Sullivan: What particular words would the Senator like me to withdraw?

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Nov 2011)

Ned O'Sullivan: I used political language.

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Nov 2011)

Ned O'Sullivan: It was terribly embarrassing and pathetic to witness the sheer political impotence of the Taoiseach and the Tánaiste in response to the arrogance of the bankers last night. All right-thinking people in the country are embarrassed for our leaders and something needs to be done about it urgently. I join with our Leader, Senator Darragh O'Brien, in asking the Leader to make time available to...

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Nov 2011)

Ned O'Sullivan: -----voted for major projects all over the country which were just getting over the line and which, clearly, will be shafted today. Specifically in regard to that issue, I was concerned to read a statement by the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Deputy Leo Varadkar, in today's issue of The Irish Times in which he took a machine gun to infrastructure along the entire west coast in...

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Nov 2011)

Ned O'Sullivan: We have substantial funds in the bank and have a credit balance.

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Nov 2011)

Ned O'Sullivan: I cannot speak for Galway and other places but I can speak for Kerry and, if it is only breaking even, the amount of amount of additional tourism revenues it brings to the entire south-west region must be considered. Instead of knocking what was achieved for the rural areas by Fianna Fáil, the Minister should be saving the Cork-Swansea service, on which he is silent. We are all battling at...

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Nov 2011)

Ned O'Sullivan: I support the call by Senator Ó Murchú and others for a debate on the Gaza situation but I do not want it to be a political one. As far as I am concerned, this is a humanitarian issue. These are decent people who are friends of ours. Reference was made to former a Fianna Fáil Deputy, Chris Andrews, who has a long record in human rights, as did his late father. They are not out there...
