Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2013)

Caít Keane: Everybody would like a discussion on corporation tax and openness and transparency. As Mr. Barry O'Leary, chief executive of the IDA, and Senator Deirdre Clune have said, everything we do is open, out there and transparent, unlike some other countries. A debate on this issue, tabled many months ago, is taking place today in Europe. This story has been in the public domain and there is a...

Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2013)

Caít Keane: It is a commendation. On the issue of discretion, when a politician, be it a Minister, a Deputy or a Senator, is stopped by a garda, there is a duty on them to be open and transparent. When Members call press conferences on issues, such as traffic issues, I want the committee-----

Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2013)

Caít Keane: I want the committee that deals with ethics in public office to ensure that when politicians call press conferences on an issue, they should declare an interest if they have been in any way involved in that issue. They should be the first to come out and put their hands up, saying "I was involved too and the Garda used its discretion", be it Deputy Flanagan, Deputy Wallace or any Deputy.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2013)

Caít Keane: The Garda Síochána is doing a brilliant job. I want to take up a point Senator Mark Daly made.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2013)

Caít Keane: Hold on a minute. This is important.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2013)

Caít Keane: No. I want to correct the record.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2013)

Caít Keane: Senator Daly said that people who make accusations are being targeted by gardaí.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2013)

Caít Keane: They are not being targeted. Deputy Clare Daly took a right turn and was stopped by a Garda in the course of duty. She was not targeted.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2013)

Caít Keane: She took a right turn. She was not targeted.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2013)

Caít Keane: I did not say that.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Climate Change: Discussion (21 May 2013)

Caít Keane: Will the submissions be made available afterwards?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Climate Change: Discussion (21 May 2013)

Caít Keane: Why?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Climate Change: Discussion (21 May 2013)

Caít Keane: The submissions are valuable. We should make them available to the public because the committee seeks guidance from all sides. It is common practice to publish submissions.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Climate Change: Discussion (21 May 2013)

Caít Keane: I shall leave my questions on methodology until the private session. We all must engage and convince people about rising global temperatures. Science has proven that global temperatures are rising but its hard to convince people when we have to put our coats on in May. People assume that we are play-acting. There must be scientific proof. Even though we know that global temperatures are...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Climate Change: Discussion (21 May 2013)

Caít Keane: I welcome the witnesses and thank them for their most informative presentations. This is probably one of the most important meetings of this committee because we are all charged with sustainable development and ensuring that we, as politicians, leave the earth much better than we found it. Hopefully, we will all strive to do that. How to do it and how much it will cost are the two big...

Seanad: Address to Seanad Éireann by Mr. Jim Higgins, MEP (16 May 2013)

Caít Keane: I welcome Deputy Higgins to the House. I thank him for the kind words he said about his enjoyable experiences here. One is not supposed to enjoy anything in politics. It should be painful all the way. I would like to ask a question about the future of Europe. There has been a great deal of talk about the proposed referendum in the UK and the trouble it could cause. Recently, some 130 MPs...

Seanad: Order of Business (16 May 2013)

Caít Keane: I wholeheartedly support Senator John Crown's call in regard to genetic testing and take note of his final statement that it is eventually a cost-saving exercise. It would be a false economy not to ensure this test is made available for people who need it. As Senator Crown said, the numbers are not huge. I stand to raise the issue of the new advances in stem cell research, details of which...

Seanad: Seanad Bill 2013: Second Stage (15 May 2013)

Caít Keane: I welcome the Minister to the House. I am delighted to speak on the topic although not, perhaps, delighted that there is a proposal to abolish the Seanad. The referendum on the Seanad is coming up and the decision will be left to the voter. I add the caveat, however, that the decision must be left to an informed voter. I congratulate Senators Zappone, Quinn and Crown for bringing forward...

Seanad: Wind Energy Guidelines: Statements (15 May 2013)

Caít Keane: I propose the suspension of the sitting until 3 p.m.

Seanad: Wind Energy Guidelines: Statements (15 May 2013)

Caít Keane: I congratulate Senator Kelly on introducing a Bill to the Seanad. It is what the Seanad can be and is used for and he has used it well.
