Personal Insolvency Bill 2012: Second Stage (Resumed) (12 Jul 2012)

Clare Daly: There is no doubt that the Bill is long awaited. However, unlike some of the Labour Deputies, I do not think there will be great celebrations about it. The legislation is disappointing and we will be tabling a number of amendments on Committee Stage to try to improve it. It is not the great step forward that many people require and it does not deal with the core issue of mortgage debt....

Gaeltacht Bill 2012 [Seanad]: Second Stage (12 Jul 2012)

Clare Daly: Like Deputy Flanagan, I came through our education system - eight years in primary school, secondary school and university - without a word of Irish and I, too, am amazed by the number of Deputies who can speak Irish because it is not a common trait among the rest of the working population in a similar age category. We face a crisis here because all of us, as citizens and Irish people, would...

Education (Amendment) (Protection of Schools) Bill 2012: Second Stage (Resumed) [Private Members] (4 Jul 2012)

Clare Daly: It is absolutely nauseating to listen to Members from the Government benches talking about improving quality in education when twice today parents, students and other pupils had to descend on the streets outside in defence of education. We are discussing small schools but it would be remiss of me not to mention the protest which took place today against the cuts in the numbers of special...

Oireachtas Members' Salaries (4 Jul 2012)

Clare Daly: The worst excuse I have ever heard is that the measure might be popular, by which the Minister means it would be welcomed by the majority of citizens because Deputies are overpaid. Our wages are in excess of the pay received by the majority of the working population.

Oireachtas Members' Salaries (4 Jul 2012)

Clare Daly: I will get to that point. It is my main question.

Oireachtas Members' Salaries (4 Jul 2012)

Clare Daly: The Government has the ability to reduce our pay. The issue of expenses is in the public domain, which I welcome.
