Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Policing Issues: An Garda Síochána (7 Dec 2017)

Lorraine Clifford Lee: I want to ask more questions, if I can be allowed, Chairman.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Policing Issues: An Garda Síochána (7 Dec 2017)

Lorraine Clifford Lee: I am looking at the clock. I think I only had two minutes.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Policing Issues: An Garda Síochána (7 Dec 2017)

Lorraine Clifford Lee: Please allow me an extra couple of minutes. Other members of the committee were given ample time.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Policing Issues: An Garda Síochána (7 Dec 2017)

Lorraine Clifford Lee: Perhaps I can explain to the head usher that I needed an extra couple of minutes and that is why the next committee has overrun.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Policing Issues: An Garda Síochána (7 Dec 2017)

Lorraine Clifford Lee: I want to continue to ask some questions. Thank you. I have lost my train of thought.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Policing Issues: An Garda Síochána (7 Dec 2017)

Lorraine Clifford Lee: My question is on the new gardaí to be allocated to the pilot scheme stations. Will they be redistributed from the gardaí already in the same division or will new Garda resources be put into these six stations?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Policing Issues: An Garda Síochána (7 Dec 2017)

Lorraine Clifford Lee: Is that across the six stations?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Policing Issues: An Garda Síochána (7 Dec 2017)

Lorraine Clifford Lee: That means, on average, the Garda deputation can perhaps see an extra eight or nine gardaí going into each of the six new stations. Is that correct?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Policing Issues: An Garda Síochána (7 Dec 2017)

Lorraine Clifford Lee: Earlier, the deputation referred to Rush Garda Station, which is one of the six to be reopened. It is in an area of increasing population. There is a population explosion in north County Dublin. Does Mr. Twomey envisage more gardaí being allocated to Rush than other stations named in the pilot scheme?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Policing Issues: An Garda Síochána (7 Dec 2017)

Lorraine Clifford Lee: I have one question left.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Policing Issues: An Garda Síochána (7 Dec 2017)

Lorraine Clifford Lee: When does Mr. Twomey envisage that the station will be reopened? I know the people in Rush. The town is in my constituency. They are concerned about this and there is talk of the station being reopened. When does Mr. Twomey envisage the station being reopened?

Seanad: Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy (6 Dec 2017)

Lorraine Clifford Lee: I will keep my tribute brief because I know many Senators wish to speak and we are limited on time. I will not repeat what has already been said but I would like to extend my sympathies to Mona, John, Mary, and Senator Hanafin's grandchildren, whom he adored. Unfortunately, I did not know Des personally but I am aware of the very proud tradition in his family in respect of the Fianna...

Seanad: Domestic Violence Bill 2017: Report and Final Stages (30 Nov 2017)

Lorraine Clifford Lee: I thank the Minister of State for his work. It has truly been a great experience to work alongside him and other colleagues in the House to produce this groundbreaking legislation. I pay particular tribute to Senator Kelleher who has been to the fore in this debate, assisted by many other people in this House and civic groups. It is a wonderful example of collaborative work. It is great...

Seanad: Garda Overtime Budget: Statements (29 Nov 2017)

Lorraine Clifford Lee: I thank the Minister for coming here this evening. He has great skill in talking about everything but the subject matter. This relates to the statement issued by Mr. Pat Leahy, the assistant Garda commissioner for the Dublin metropolitan area. It is the statement about which we are all concerned. There was a brief reference to it-----

Seanad: Garda Overtime Budget: Statements (29 Nov 2017)

Lorraine Clifford Lee: Yes, but the most pressing issue is the statement-----

Seanad: Garda Overtime Budget: Statements (29 Nov 2017)

Lorraine Clifford Lee: -----issued by Assistant Commissioner Pat Leahy relating to no overtime being authorised until the new year. That is what concerns people today. He sent a notification to the chief superintendents in the Dublin area yesterday stating that no overtime is authorised and any operations intended on an overtime basis are cancelled. He stated the Garda budget for 2017 has been exhausted and all...

Seanad: Garda Overtime Budget: Statements (29 Nov 2017)

Lorraine Clifford Lee: I understand that but it still does not take away from this fact and it is what we must clarify today. Similar statements were sent to Galway and Cork. The Taoiseach told the Dáil this morning there is funding for overtime in December. He was keen to understand yesterday's public announcement a bit better. Does the Minister have any understanding of how this announcement came to be...

Seanad: Commencement Matters: Garda Stations (28 Nov 2017)

Lorraine Clifford Lee: The Minister of State is welcome to the Chamber. Last week, Assistant Garda Commissioner Pat Leahy confirmed at a meeting of the Committee of Public Accounts that Rush Garda station was on the list of six stations that were to be recommended to the Government for reopening. I welcome this decision. Rush Garda station's closure in 2012 has had an adverse impact on the local community. Rush...

Seanad: Commencement Matters: Garda Stations (28 Nov 2017)

Lorraine Clifford Lee: The Minister of State mentioned that the Minister intends to bring the final report to Government shortly. Can he give me a commitment that this will be done before Christmas? On the specifications agreement, what is the timeframe in that regard? For example, will it be one month, two months or six months? What is the timeframe for the tender process and within what timeframe following...

Seanad: Domestic Violence Bill 2017: Committee Stage (Resumed) (28 Nov 2017)

Lorraine Clifford Lee: I will keep my contribution short.
