Seanad: Order of Business (12 Dec 2012)

Mary White: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Order of Business (12 Dec 2012)

Mary White: That is not a principle.

Seanad: Order of Business (12 Dec 2012)

Mary White: I raise again the cuts in the respite care grant and move an amendment to the Order of Business requesting that the Minister for Social Protection, Deputy Joan Burton, come to the Seanad this evening to apologise. The Minister for Education and Skills, Deputy Ruairí Quinn, is a man of principle who had the guts to apologise for cuts in funding to DEIS schools. I will not forget what he did...

Seanad: Order of Business (12 Dec 2012)

Mary White: These were introduced for the sake of saving ¤26 million. Does the Government not have any imagination. It may be that too many Ministers are former teachers and trade union officials and do not have a clue about how to be innovative and make savings of ¤26 million elsewhere in their budgets. Yesterday, I attended a protest by carers for the second time. Senators should go outside to...

Seanad: Order of Business (12 Dec 2012)

Mary White: The truth is hard to take. I do not know how Labour Party Senators can sit here. They should join the Fine Gael Party once and for all because there is no longer any difference between the two parties.

Seanad: Order of Business (12 Dec 2012)

Mary White: Yes, I am calling for the Minister to come to the House to discuss the cut. Incidentally, I thank the Cathaoirleach for his support yesterday.

Seanad: Order of Business (12 Dec 2012)

Mary White: They will not be thrown in prison.

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Dec 2012)

Mary White: At least you admit you got it wrong.

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Dec 2012)

Mary White: At the weekend we had a trenchant response from the Minister for Social Protection, Deputy Joan Burton, that she would stand by the cuts in the budget. I hope she was listening to and looking at Archbishop Diarmuid Martin on "The Frontline" last night. With the Cathaoirleach's permission, I would like to draw attention to what he said. He stated the budget is to serve the common good and...

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Dec 2012)

Mary White: The archbishop also stated caring for people in the home, particularly the elderly, is important and is an investment in humanity. Last week, I participated in the protest outside Leinster House against the cut of ¤325 to the respite care grant. At the protest were people in wheelchairs who are carers. The Minister should go out at 1 p.m. and meet the people and listen to their stories....

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Dec 2012)

Mary White: What about going up to see Hillary Clinton?

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Dec 2012)

Mary White: She is an inspirational leader.

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Dec 2012)

Mary White: I thank the Leader, I would be delighted.

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Dec 2012)

Mary White: There are many aspects of the budget that remind me of the debacle of the budget introduced by the then Minister for Finance, Mr. John Bruton, when he imposed a tax on children's shoes. The cuts to older people in this budget are of the same order. Each one of us is getting older day by day and there is an increasing number of older people in society. As people get older they will have...

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Dec 2012)

Mary White: The sharp reduction in the income thresholds for the over 70s will cause hardship and further undermine the ability of older people who will lose their medical cards as a result of the immediate health care costs. I ask the Leader to invite the Minister to come to the House. It is a tragedy for older people that the Government did not appoint a dedicated Minister for older people.

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Dec 2012)

Mary White: That is the reason there is nobody to stand up for them. I am aware the Minister of State at the Department of Health, Deputy Kathleen Lynch, is a very good Minister but she has four or five portfolios. When Fianna Fáil is back in government, which will be soon-----

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Dec 2012)

Mary White: -----we will appoint a Minister for older people.

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Dec 2012)

Mary White: That was not the reason the Senator left.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (29 Nov 2012)

Mary White: The Senator is right.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 Nov 2012)

Mary White: We have had emotional language in the Chamber dealing with the Department of Health. I wish to raise another urgent and scandalous issue. On October 21, Emily O'Reilly, the Ombudsman, decided to exercise her right to make a special report to the Dáil and the Seanad because of an unsatisfactory response from the Department of Health and the Minister. It deserves our urgent consideration...
