Seanad: Order of Business (10 Oct 2012)

Marc MacSharry: I might have new ones.

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Oct 2012)

Marc MacSharry: What about free GP care?

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Oct 2012)

Marc MacSharry: I join others on the Government side who have called for a debate of confidence in the Minister for Health. The sideshow has gone on for far too long. We have overruns of some ¤300 million and there are concerns all over the country. We are unanimous that we want these primary care centres built as quickly as possible, in whatever order the criteria dictate and resources permit. However,...

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Oct 2012)

Marc MacSharry: On a point of order, I understand it is the tradition in this House for the Chair to intervene if an attack is made on an individual who is not present in the Chamber.

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Oct 2012)

Marc MacSharry: It would be reasonable to allow me to confirm my attendance in the House for many debates.

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Oct 2012)

Marc MacSharry: Having been corrected on this issue many times in the past when I criticised Members who were not present-----

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Oct 2012)

Marc MacSharry: -----I expect to be afforded similar protection by the Chair. I ask for an opportunity to point out that I have attended on each day-----

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Oct 2012)

Marc MacSharry: Senator Colm Burke, a newer Member of the House, is well aware that Senators must attend to many duties, including in the House.

Seanad: School Transport: Statements (26 Sep 2012)

Marc MacSharry: I thank Senator O'Sullivan for sharing a little of his time. As a former business person and one who knows business, I know the Minister of State appreciates the need for common sense. I have written to him about a case, that of the Gilgarrow family in Sligo, concerning school transport. A child in that family attends Coola school even though the closest school is Ballymote but because...

Seanad: Health Service Executive (Governance) Bill 2012: Second Stage (26 Sep 2012)

Marc MacSharry: Please.

Seanad: Health Service Executive (Governance) Bill 2012: Second Stage (26 Sep 2012)

Marc MacSharry: Swords and Balbriggan first no doubt.

Seanad: Health Service Executive (Governance) Bill 2012: Second Stage (26 Sep 2012)

Marc MacSharry: The Senator should tell that to the Minister of State, Deputy Shortall.

Seanad: Health Service Executive (Governance) Bill 2012: Second Stage (26 Sep 2012)

Marc MacSharry: The previous Minister did not get it either.

Seanad: Health Service Executive (Governance) Bill 2012: Second Stage (26 Sep 2012)

Marc MacSharry: I welcome the Minister to the House. The Fianna Fáil Party will support this legislation but remains unconvinced about what it can contribute to the improvement of services and, in this context, I wish to make a few points. When I sat on the Government side of the House, I was highly critical of the establishment of the HSE in 2004. Moreover, even while on the Government side, Senator...

Seanad: Order of Business (25 Sep 2012)

Marc MacSharry: Yes.

Seanad: Order of Business (25 Sep 2012)

Marc MacSharry: Yes.

Seanad: Order of Business (25 Sep 2012)

Marc MacSharry: I propose an amendment to the Order of Business, that the Minister for Justice and Equality should come to the House to debate these issues, in particular, crime and the State's reaction to the crimes of recent days. We have witnessed many murders, none more brutal that the one in Sligo where somebody sitting in his home was tied up, beaten and left to die for a number of days. It shows a...

Seanad: Health (Pricing and Supply of Medical Goods) Bill 2012: Committee and Remaining Stages (19 Sep 2012)

Marc MacSharry: I thank the Minister of State for coming to the House. While we have reservations about certain aspects of the Bill, I welcome the fact that the Minister has agreed to reflect on those between now and the Bill returning to the Dáil, without actually giving any commitment as such. We look forward to the Bill being passed in the other House so that we can see the results of it.

Seanad: Health (Pricing and Supply of Medical Goods) Bill 2012: Committee and Remaining Stages (19 Sep 2012)

Marc MacSharry: I take the Minister of State's point. Nevertheless, I propose to press the amendment on the basis that the Bill would be improved by having this matter dealt with clearly in the main body of the text.

Seanad: Health (Pricing and Supply of Medical Goods) Bill 2012: Committee and Remaining Stages (19 Sep 2012)

Marc MacSharry: As we made clear during the debate on the Access to Cancer Treatment Bill 2012, which we brought forward in this House, there are concerns that the process for gaining access to particular medicines and treatments seems very obscure and secretive. There is little or no transparency for patients in regard to decisions as to whether or when a product will be made available. This is...
