Éamon Ó Cuív: The local authority in Wicklow is very efficient.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Horse Industry in Ireland: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Jul 2015)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Could Ms Owens please clarify what she said? I understood from Ms Owens's comment to Deputy Naughten that if one could take all the mares out it would result in a reduction in the number of horses the following year, but there seems to be the same number. Does Ms Owens say the horses are coming in through the North or in boats across the Irish Sea?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Horse Industry in Ireland: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Jul 2015)
Éamon Ó Cuív: If one were moving cattle or sheep the health implications alone would mean that one would bring the clampers down. There would be total war if that was happening with any other type of animal. I am very surprised to hear that. The matter is worth investigating by the committee.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Horse Industry in Ireland: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Jul 2015)
Éamon Ó Cuív: They are coming on the ferry.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Horse Industry in Ireland: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Jul 2015)
Éamon Ó Cuív: There is a big enough problem here without importing the problem.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Horse Industry in Ireland: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Jul 2015)
Éamon Ó Cuív: One thing that comes across as extraordinary is that we cannot seem to get to grips with the problem of ensuring all horses are microchipped. As they are not small animals, it is not like dealing with cats where one could breed 100 very quickly. Horses have a longer gestation period. As they are big animals, it is amazing that we cannot settle this issue once and for all. On the...

To ask the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade if he will provide details of discussions he has had with the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Ms Theresa Villiers, and with the Minister for Justice in the Northern Ireland Executive, Mr. David Ford, in relation to prison issues in Northern Ireland for segregated prisoners; in particular, if he raised the issues of detention for...
- Written Answers — Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade: Northern Ireland Issues (14 Jul 2015)
Éamon Ó Cuív: 114. To ask the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade if he has made any representations to the Minister for Justice in Northern Ireland, Mr. David Ford, in respect of the implementation of the stocktake carried out in relation to the conditions in which segregated prisoners are held at Her Majesty's Prison, Maghaberry, in Northern Ireland; if he has requested a full implementation of its...

- Written Answers — Department of Health: Services for People with Disabilities (14 Jul 2015)
Éamon Ó Cuív: 691. To ask the Minister for Health the position regarding funding provided this year for services for persons with disabilities, particularly school leavers and young adults, serviced through Saint Michael’s House which is informing parents of its inability to cater for these young adults, due to lack of funding, facilities, and staff; and if he will make a statement on the matter....
- Rural Coastal Communities Report: Motion (10 Jul 2015)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I compliment the committee chairperson, Deputy Doyle, on the fantastic work and effort that has been put into this report. Although he claimed at the beginning not to know much about coastal communities or fishermen, he made a significant contribution to this report. I must also say I do not have the knowledge of fishing that Deputy Martin Ferris has, but I have been dealing with fishermen...
- Topical Issue Debate: Agriculture Prices (9 Jul 2015)
Éamon Ó Cuív: One can do anything with figures, and unfortunately the Minister of State's colleague is a genius with this. The Minister says the change in price in recent weeks is likely due to a combination of various factors and the fact that supplies are in full flow at present due to seasonal factors. However, if there are a large number of sheep coming to the market at a low price and the price is...
- Topical Issue Debate: Agriculture Prices (9 Jul 2015)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I thank the Minister of State, Deputy Ann Phelan, for coming to the House to debate this important issue. The decline in Common Agricultural Policy funding means that the issue of price has to take centre stage. I have been telling the Minister for three years that it is absolutely vital for him to realise that the price issue cannot be left simply to market forces. The reality is that...
- Topical Issue Debate: Agriculture Prices (9 Jul 2015)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I do not believe the factories are throwing 3.5 kg of meat into their skips. My view is that if one's lamb is killed at 25 kg, one should be paid for 25 kg. Can the Minister not insist at all the beef and sheep forums he is so keen on that farmers are paid on the basis of the full weight of the animals they send in? This seems to be another way for the factories in a monopoly situation to...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: National Strategic Plan for Sustainable Aquaculture Development: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Jul 2015)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I apologise for being late but there was an agricultural event for Holstein friesians in Limerick today and I have just returned from that. We should recognise this is a document published by the Minister. We will make a submission and the Minister will then publish a final document. We are not writing the document. Whatever we do as a committee, the witnesses have to understand that...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: National Strategic Plan for Sustainable Aquaculture Development: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Jul 2015)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Is that in respect of fish farms?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: National Strategic Plan for Sustainable Aquaculture Development: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Jul 2015)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Size or total elimination.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: National Strategic Plan for Sustainable Aquaculture Development: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Jul 2015)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I wish we had a lot more time on this because it seems that on the shellfish side, rather than on the finfish farming side, which I will park for a minute, the vision Bord Iascaigh Mhara was putting forward was that we needed very large processing companies to make it economical and to become a player. That always raises two questions. First, who would work in these factories? Would it be...
