Health (Amendment) Bill 2010: Second and Remaining Stages (Resumed) (23 Jun 2010)

Jan O'Sullivan: With the permission of the Chair, I wish to share time with Deputy Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin. I will give eight minutes to Deputy Ó Caoláin. Earlier this morning we were endeavouring to get more time allotted for consideration of this legislation and particularly for Committee and Report Stages but we were not successful. I note that Report Stage of the Road Traffic Bill 2009 has been...

Health (Amendment) Bill 2010: Second and Remaining Stages (Resumed) (23 Jun 2010)

Jan O'Sullivan: I am making a general point that the House is able to give more than three hours for Report Stage of a Bill dealing with road traffic and we have been given three quarters of an hour for Committee and Report Stages of a Bill dealing with the welfare of children and children who have died in the care of the State. It seems this is an unbalanced use of parliamentary time. I have to ask which...

Order of Business. (23 Jun 2010)

Jan O'Sullivan: It is not agreed.

Order of Business. (23 Jun 2010)

Jan O'Sullivan: On behalf of the Labour Party, I also object to the guillotine being used. The legislation is concerned with the files of children who died in the care of the State and the work of the independent review group. It is extraordinary that, while the group was set up by the Minister for Health and Children, the only way it can get the information it requires is via a circuitous route through...

Order of Business. (23 Jun 2010)

Jan O'Sullivan: I strongly object to the time being curtailed. I urge the Ceann Comhairle to ensure adequate time is allowed to deal with this important issue.

Order of Business. (23 Jun 2010)

Jan O'Sullivan: The Tánaiste has offered more time for Committee and Remaining Stages. On behalf of the Labour Party, that would be helpful.

Order of Business. (23 Jun 2010)

Jan O'Sullivan: If that is acceptable to others.

Order of Business. (23 Jun 2010)

Jan O'Sullivan: I have already made the case for more time. The Ombudsman for Children only responded to the Bill in recent days, so I am sure the Minister has not had time to consider the Ombudsman's important opinions. It would be crazy of us to pass this legislation today if the Minister has not considered that important contribution to the debate. We need more time on the Bill.

Health (Amendment) Bill 2010: Second Stage (22 Jun 2010)

Jan O'Sullivan: I refer to the issue on which Deputy Shatter finished, that this Bill is rushed legislation. It is very important legislation and we want to ensure we get it right. We are talking about the deaths of children in care and trying to have the report produced by two respected people, with broad knowledge and compassion in this field. I know they will do the best job they can but we want to...

Tourism Industry: Motion (22 Jun 2010)

Jan O'Sullivan: Is that agreed? Agreed.

Tourism Industry: Motion (22 Jun 2010)

Jan O'Sullivan: To speak about tourism is to speak about jobs and stimulating the economy, both of which are desperately required in almost every town and village in the country. Despite the spin being peddled from the Government press office, the economic catastrophe visited upon this country by Fianna Fáil and its friends in the construction industry and the banking elites shows no sign of abating. Just...
