- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Closure of Owenacurra Centre: Engagement with HSE (14 Dec 2021)
Pat Buckley: Why could it not buy one in Midleton?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Closure of Owenacurra Centre: Engagement with HSE (14 Dec 2021)
Pat Buckley: I am sorry for cutting across Mr. Fitzgerald but I am conscious of the time. The HSE's opening statement mentioned A Vision for Change. We have a catchment area of over 94,000 people in east Cork. The HSE is obliged to provide a service when areas reach around 100,000 people. We are fairly close to that and yet it is moving services back into the city, even to the far side of the city,...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Closure of Owenacurra Centre: Engagement with HSE (14 Dec 2021)
Pat Buckley: It was a 24-bed service-----
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Closure of Owenacurra Centre: Engagement with HSE (14 Dec 2021)
Pat Buckley: I thank Mr. Fitzgerald for his honesty. Chair, may I ask just one more question?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Closure of Owenacurra Centre: Engagement with HSE (14 Dec 2021)
Pat Buckley: I will be brief. Thank you, Chair, and I thank Mr. Fitzgerald again for his reply. My fear is that while everything looks very well in plans and on paper, Mr. Fitzgerald said the services are consultant-led. We have problems with recruitment of consultants and so on at the moment. My biggest fear, therefore, is that east Cork will lose its vital services and that the HSE is trying to fix...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Closure of Owenacurra Centre: Engagement with HSE (14 Dec 2021)
Pat Buckley: I want to return to the issue of independent living. I do not have any faith in it because the timeframe is way too long. Would the HSE consider retaining the existing services in Midleton while working around the difficulties? The witnesses referred to other alternatives but I do not believe they are there. If they are not there as alternatives, they are not an option at the moment....
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Closure of Owenacurra Centre: Engagement with HSE (14 Dec 2021)
Pat Buckley: I will make one final point. I have listened to what Mr. Fitzgerald has said. I believe we will be back here again, perhaps in 12 months' time. As many of the Deputies on this call are well aware, between 2000 and 2002, we had 69 suicides in east Cork, the majority of these occurring in Midleton. Despite this, Mr. Fitzgerald is telling me we do not need services in this town. I do not...
- Committee on Public Petitions: Consideration of Public Petitions on Unauthorised Developments (9 Dec 2021)
Pat Buckley: I thank the witnesses. It is great to be here talking about this. God knows this is surely not a one-off situation, although I hope it is. A substantial amount of information was provided to the committee about this. There were nearly 200 pages of evidence. Going back to what Mr. Barrett was saying regarding 2012 and the enforcement notice in 2013, Westmeath County Council clearly states...
- Committee on Public Petitions: Consideration of Public Petitions on Unauthorised Developments (9 Dec 2021)
Pat Buckley: I thank Mr. Barrett. I will try to be brief with my second question. Mr. Barrett referred to the Portaneena Marina belonging to Waterways Ireland. Waterways Ireland is paid money by the State, so those are public funds, if I am correct. There is nothing wrong with the marina or its location. It is beneficial in every way to society once, as Mr. Barrett says, everything is done right....
- Committee on Public Petitions: Consideration of Public Petitions on Unauthorised Developments (9 Dec 2021)
Pat Buckley: As we say in Cork, it is a box of frogs.
- Committee on Public Petitions: Consideration of Public Petitions on Unauthorised Developments (9 Dec 2021)
Pat Buckley: I thank all the contributors to the meeting. I was well aware of this issue because I sat on the previous Committee on Public Petitions. It is not easy. I commend all those who gave evidence today. This issue is bigger than I had realised. There are many questions to be asked. The issue of State money being used but not recouped sounds very strange. As I stated in my previous...
- Committee on Public Petitions: Consideration of Public Petitions on Unauthorised Developments (9 Dec 2021)
Pat Buckley: I cannot remember who asked a question about moneys being collected at jetties. Mr. O’Sullivan referred to his experience working all over the country with the EPA and planning authorities. Is it possible that there are other jetties around the country that do not have planning permission but which are charging money, be they in the possession of either private or public bodies?
- Committee on Public Petitions: Consideration of Public Petitions on Unauthorised Developments (9 Dec 2021)
Pat Buckley: I agree with the recommendation.
- Committee on Public Petitions: Consideration of Public Petitions on Unauthorised Developments (9 Dec 2021)
Pat Buckley: Yes. The centre is actually based in my area and I am very familiar with the case. I agree with the recommendation. A lot of work has already been done on this issue by the Joint Committee on Health and the Joint Sub-Committee on Mental Health and it will be discussed again by the former committee next Tuesday. If the outcome of that meeting is not satisfactory, I ask that we would...
- Committee on Public Petitions: Consideration of Public Petitions on Unauthorised Developments (9 Dec 2021)
Pat Buckley: That is agreed.
- Committee on Public Petitions: Consideration of Public Petitions on Unauthorised Developments (9 Dec 2021)
Pat Buckley: Briefly, I wish to thank the Chairman, the witnesses and the secretariat. I wish to thank the case workers in particular because the volume of work is phenomenal and that should be acknowledged.
- Offshore Renewable Energy: Motion [Private Members] (8 Dec 2021)
Pat Buckley: I congratulate the Regional Group on bringing forward this motion and I hope that its members will accept the Sinn Féin amendment. Ireland relies heavily on imported energy today. Once we use up the fuel in the Corrib gas field, we will be nearly completely reliant on gas we import via the gas pipelines from the UK. We have seen what can happen when Russia decides to limit the...
- Protected Disclosures (Amendment) Bill 2021: First Stage (2 Dec 2021)
Pat Buckley: I too am delighted to introduce this Bill with my colleague Deputy Farrell. I will be brief because she has explained a lot of this already. In my own experience over a number of years in my previous role as spokesperson on mental health, I received a number of protected disclosures and the law was very weak. I raised this issue on numerous occasions with three separate Ministers and a...
