- Seanad: Order of Business (2 Jul 2009)
Nicky McFadden: I would also like to raise the issue of people flying into this country to claim dole and the suggestion that each of these people defrauding our country has cost the State â¬10,000. This is extraordinary when so many of our people need the dole and we do not enough to pay them at this stage. Why is there not joined-up thinking between the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform and...
- Seanad: Order of Business (2 Jul 2009)
Nicky McFadden: These are desperate stakes.
- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (30 Jun 2009)
Nicky McFadden: Will the Leader arrange the meeting he agreed to arrange last week between Oireachtas Members from County Westmeath with the National Roads Authority? I am sure this is still uppermost in his mind and I look forward to the meeting as soon as possible. The â¬3 billion provided to the Anglo Irish Bank was found within the Central Bank and if I, as a mother, had a child who was ill and in pain...
- Seanad: Order of Business (25 Jun 2009)
Nicky McFadden: Senator Walsh told us not to be political and this is very relevant. If Fianna Fáil had put the national interest first in recent years, we would not be in this situation. The Minister for Finance, Deputy Lenihan, was conciliatory and admitted the economy had been overheated from 2001 to 2003. He has always said that this was the case. He accepted what the International Monetary Fund has...

Nicky McFadden: Well done.
- Seanad: Order of Business (25 Jun 2009)
Nicky McFadden: Deputy Richard Bruton was asking them.

Nicky McFadden: Is it still before the courts?
- Seanad: Order of Business (25 Jun 2009)
Nicky McFadden: It is not over.
- Seanad: Dairy Industry: Motion (24 Jun 2009)
Nicky McFadden: We look forward to it.
- Seanad: Dairy Industry: Motion (24 Jun 2009)
Nicky McFadden: Will the Senator vote for either the amendment or the original motion?
- Seanad: Dairy Industry: Motion (24 Jun 2009)
Nicky McFadden: Farmers, in particular dairy farmers, are being screwed.
- Seanad: Dairy Industry: Motion (24 Jun 2009)
Nicky McFadden: I apologise. The supplementary budget saw the suspension of the young farmers' installation grant, cuts to the suckler cow welfare scheme, the fallen animal scheme and others. Dairy farmers work very hard, milking twice with little chance for holidays. It is outrageous they are being offered 20 cent per litre for milk when it costs 27 cent per litre to produce. An office for fair trading...
- Seanad: Nursing Homes Support Scheme Bill 2008: Report and Final Stages (24 Jun 2009)
Nicky McFadden: I also welcome the amendment. It is a little ironic that for the first time in the Bill, the words "mental capacity" are used. I am glad the Minister of State has acknowledged that a person's mental capacity must be taken into account. I regret she did not use those words when speaking about the evaluation of a person's needs. When the Bill goes back to the Dáil, she might consider this.
- Seanad: Nursing Homes Support Scheme Bill 2008: Report and Final Stages (24 Jun 2009)
Nicky McFadden: I am very disappointed that the debate has fallen on deaf ears, especially in the area of quality of life and the mental health of the individual. We have tabled amendments and I am very disappointed the Minister of State has not taken on board our suggestion that mental health be taken into account as part of the evaluation of a person's ability to cope. I read out the Minister of State's...
- Seanad: Nursing Homes Support Scheme Bill 2008: Report and Final Stages (24 Jun 2009)
Nicky McFadden: I second the amendment. Fine Gael is supporting this proposal which was discussed on Committee Stage.
- Seanad: Nursing Homes Support Scheme Bill 2008: Report and Final Stages (24 Jun 2009)
Nicky McFadden: The only change proposed in amendment No. 15 is the inclusion of the words "of ancillary State support". What do those words mean? Do they mean any amount paid by way of ancillary State support? That could mean anything I suppose. I would like the Minister of State to outline clearly what it means.
- Seanad: Nursing Homes Support Scheme Bill 2008: Report and Final Stages (24 Jun 2009)
Nicky McFadden: I thank the Minister of State for tabling amendment No. 17, particularly in the light of the fact that Members expressed grave concerns about this matter on Committee Stage. I appreciate the fact that she listened to our arguments. It is proposed in amendment No. 18 that the phrase "and particular regard to the expressed, verbal or written wishes of the person" should also be included in...
- Seanad: Nursing Homes Support Scheme Bill 2008: Report and Final Stages (24 Jun 2009)
Nicky McFadden: I support this amendment. It makes absolute sense that people's situations would be reviewed and we discussed that there might be a change in a person's health in that it might improve. I agree there must be regular reviews and not later than 12 months.
- Seanad: Nursing Homes Support Scheme Bill 2008: Report and Final Stages (24 Jun 2009)
Nicky McFadden: Hear, hear.
- Seanad: Nursing Homes Support Scheme Bill 2008: Report and Final Stages (24 Jun 2009)
Nicky McFadden: The idea that the private sector should have to furnish accounts and the public sector should not is unfair. I cannot understand this. There are differences in the two sets of figures. It is most unfair on those who are trying to run a business and provide the best possible care in private nursing homes. There is no appeals mechanism and I believe the people who need care will find the...
