Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Broadcasting Authority of Ireland: Discussion (4 Jul 2017)

Terry Leyden: That would be an awful tragedy. I strongly recommend that the witnesses get in touch with the manager there or the receiver because everything was recorded. It is terrible to lose material of that nature because they travelled the length and breadth of Ireland. I appreciate the cost of a new television station is enormous but the chairperson had said it made a great contribution and it was...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Broadcasting Authority of Ireland: Discussion (4 Jul 2017)

Terry Leyden: RTE lost too much at the start. "The Late Late Show" and others were taped over.

Seanad: Order of Business (28 Jun 2017)

Terry Leyden: The Constituency Commission Report 2017 has been published.

Seanad: Order of Business (28 Jun 2017)

Terry Leyden: I accept that, and from my vast experience-----

Seanad: Order of Business (28 Jun 2017)

Terry Leyden: From my experience here there will be no changes. That is what I have seen over the years. There is profound shock in north Roscommon and the Boyle area as 7,800 members of the population will be brought into the constituency of Sligo-Leitrim. The area has 18 electoral divisions that will go from Roscommon to Sligo-Leitrim, including urban and rural Boyle, Ballyfarnan, Keadue, Cootehall,...

Seanad: Petroleum and Other Minerals Development (Prohibition of Onshore Hydraulic Fracturing) Bill 2016: Committee and Remaining Stages (28 Jun 2017)

Terry Leyden: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Kyne. As Fianna Fáil spokesperson for communications, climate change and natural resources, I must tell Senator O'Sullivan that unfortunately we cannot support the amendment for the simple reason that it would not keep with the Bill and could delay it being enacted. To be consistent, in February 2011 onshore petroleum licence options for the...

Seanad: Petroleum and Other Minerals Development (Prohibition of Onshore Hydraulic Fracturing) Bill 2016: Committee and Remaining Stages (28 Jun 2017)

Terry Leyden: I say this having represented Roscommon for the past 40 years, with 36 years in a beautiful consolidated county. These electoral divisions are the most outrageous Tullymander I have ever come across. It did not affect Meath. It did not affect the Minister in the Department. It is the most outrageous bit of work.

Seanad: Petroleum and Other Minerals Development (Prohibition of Onshore Hydraulic Fracturing) Bill 2016: Committee and Remaining Stages (28 Jun 2017)

Terry Leyden: The point I am elaborating on is that it is coming at a very convenient time for a certain person who is jumping ship from Roscommon, who may benefit from the fact the fracking Bill will be passed today, in conjunction with his colleague, Deputy Tony McLoughlin, who initiated the Bill. That is another day's work and I wish him well.

Seanad: Petroleum and Other Minerals Development (Prohibition of Onshore Hydraulic Fracturing) Bill 2016: Committee and Remaining Stages (28 Jun 2017)

Terry Leyden: I always wish politicians success. I lost an area of Galway one time and landed up in lovely Longford. That was the end of my career in the Dáil. It will be difficult for other people in Roscommon.

Seanad: Petroleum and Other Minerals Development (Prohibition of Onshore Hydraulic Fracturing) Bill 2016: Committee and Remaining Stages (28 Jun 2017)

Terry Leyden: I apologise for diverting but I had an opportunity. Fianna Fáil will oppose the amendment with the Government because we believe it to be the right thing to do. We commend the Minister of State, Deputy Kyne, and the Minister, Deputy Naughten. I heard the Minister on the radio today and he spoke very highly about this issue. When he came in as Minister, he ran with this Bill so he has...

Seanad: Petroleum and Other Minerals Development (Prohibition of Onshore Hydraulic Fracturing) Bill 2016: Committee and Remaining Stages (28 Jun 2017)

Terry Leyden: I compliment the Minister of State, Deputy Kyne, and wish him well. It is tremendous that the Government has accepted this Private Members' Bill. It is a step in the right direction because bringing forward a Private Members' Bill on one's own without the backing and support of Ministers is practically impossible. I say "well done" to Deputy Tony McLoughlin and his team for pushing it...

Seanad: Inland Fisheries (Amendment) Bill 2017: Committee and Remaining Stages (27 Jun 2017)

Terry Leyden: Is the Leas-Chathaoirleach referring to amendment of-----

Seanad: Inland Fisheries (Amendment) Bill 2017: Committee and Remaining Stages (27 Jun 2017)

Terry Leyden: I am referring to the Bill itself.

Seanad: Inland Fisheries (Amendment) Bill 2017: Committee and Remaining Stages (27 Jun 2017)

Terry Leyden: Yes, amendment of section 2-----

Seanad: Inland Fisheries (Amendment) Bill 2017: Committee and Remaining Stages (27 Jun 2017)

Terry Leyden: We can discuss any section.

Seanad: Inland Fisheries (Amendment) Bill 2017: Committee and Remaining Stages (27 Jun 2017)

Terry Leyden: I again welcome the Minister of State to the House but it would be appropriate if the Minister, Deputy Denis Naughten, came into the House to deal with the Bill because people locally are amazed that he, as Minister, would discriminate against the constituency of Roscommon-east Galway by imposing permits to fish for pike or coarse fish in the Midlands Fisheries Group of controlled waters.The...

Seanad: Inland Fisheries (Amendment) Bill 2017: Committee and Remaining Stages (27 Jun 2017)

Terry Leyden: I will respect the Chair and will move on to the next section.

Seanad: Inland Fisheries (Amendment) Bill 2017: Committee and Remaining Stages (27 Jun 2017)

Terry Leyden: Do the fines detailed in the tables in this section apply to the rivers to which I referred, namely, the River Suck, the River Inny, the River Brosna, the Little Brosna River and the Camlin River? Will this list mean bailiffs will stop children fishing on these rivers if they do not have a licence? On my farm, we have Blacks Lake and the Derryhippo River. No one belonging to me can fish in...

Seanad: Inland Fisheries (Amendment) Bill 2017: Committee and Remaining Stages (27 Jun 2017)

Terry Leyden: If people do not have a permit, this section will apply to them.

Seanad: Inland Fisheries (Amendment) Bill 2017: Committee and Remaining Stages (27 Jun 2017)

Terry Leyden: I am not getting the point across. If someone does not have a permit to fish on the River Suck, the River Inny, the River Brosna, the Little Brosna River and the Camlin River, will that person be subject to a fine? Where in the Bill does it specifically state that this was brought about? What statutory instrument does the Minister have in this regard? Is it legal?
