Seanad: Estimates for 2004: Motion. (19 Nov 2003)

Geraldine Feeney: I was listening to the debate and I heard the contributions of the Members of the Labour Party, which claims it is fighting the cases of the less well-off and those on the margins of society. I do not know where they have been but I would like to remind them of a few points. Obviously, these are not the points they read. They only read what suits them. Spending is up by €6.5 billion since...

Seanad: Estimates for 2004: Motion. (19 Nov 2003)

Geraldine Feeney: I am aware of people in my constituency who have been treated under this scheme and I know it is wonderful. Does Senator Bannon know what they say, that they cannot wait for the Opposition to come knocking on the door because they have no ideas? Geraldine Feeney: The acute psychiatric unit in Nenagh hospital will be upgraded. In Our Lady's Hospital, Cashel, step-down facilities are being introduced, as well as facilities for patients with Alzheimer's disease, psychiatric services and services for the physically handicapped. Seanad: Estimates for 2004: Motion. (19 Nov 2003)

Geraldine Feeney: I am delighted to read in the Estimates that there will be money for the implementation of the Hanly report. Seanad: Estimates for 2004: Motion. (19 Nov 2003)

Geraldine Feeney: I just want to point out to Senator Bannon, because he did raise it in his contribution, that we have increased spending by €1.6 billion to over €40 billion. That, if he can do his sums, is about 4.7% of average spending. I am proud to stand over the Estimates in this Chamber. I am proud of the Minister for Social and Family Affairs, Deputy Coughlan, for the way she did the calculations....

Geraldine Feeney: The hands of the courts appear to be tied in the sense that justice and appropriate penalties seem to be restricted, even where it is plain to lay people that the punishment is not appropriate for the crime. Could the Leader find out if there is any way Senators or the Law Reform Commission could assess, investigate and hopefully improve legislation when it comes to dealing with the problems...

Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Oct 2003)

Geraldine Feeney: I ask the Leader of the House to see if there is any way in which we could look at present legislation in relation to juveniles and improve or change it in order to make it more hard hitting. It is time to take such action in order that fatalities similar to those we saw at the weekend do not happen.
