Brendan Griffin: 1647. [37588/13]
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Rural Transport Programme: Discussion with National Transport Authority (23 Jul 2013)
Brendan Griffin: I share concerns over the voluntary aspect and trying to bring those people on board. I regard this development as very progressive as it mainstreams rural transport in the State for the first time. It is a significant step forward and I hope we will look back in the future and regard this as a watershed moment. That would be my view, which may differ from Deputy Dooley's outlook. We need...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Rural Transport Programme: Discussion with National Transport Authority (23 Jul 2013)
Brendan Griffin: I hope Mr. Murphy would also seriously consider the enforcement of any particular measures that would be outlined and be cognisant of the fact that there are concerns about the lack of enforcement capacity.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Rural Transport Programme: Discussion with National Transport Authority (23 Jul 2013)
Brendan Griffin: I thank the witnesses for their presentation. I welcome the work that is being done by the rural transport programme, which is very important for people in rural communities throughout the county. I welcome the efforts to obtain better value for money from the service. I would differ from some previous contributors in that I am optimistic the NTA can deliver that. Reform and restructuring...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: CIE Group Financial Situation: Discussion with Group Management (18 Jul 2013)
Brendan Griffin: I will make a comment to Mr. Franks. It would be a shame for the witnesses to leave this meeting without my having mentioned the point. As somebody who uses the inter-city rail service fairly regularly, I must say that it has improved immensely in recent years. There is always room for improvement, but compared to ten years ago, when the old wooden carriages were part of the stock on the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: CIE Group Financial Situation: Discussion with Group Management (18 Jul 2013)
Brendan Griffin: I thank the witnesses for attending. I apologise for missing the presentation. I am concerned, as the amount of money being lost is staggering. Have lessons been learned from how the company got into difficulty? Has anyone taken responsibility and how can we be sure this will not happen again? The disused and dismantled railway lines that are still in the ownership of CIE are useful...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: CIE Group Financial Situation: Discussion with Group Management (18 Jul 2013)
Brendan Griffin: I will address the north Kerry line because it is the one on which I have information, not because I want to be parochial. Is CIE asserting its ownership of that line?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: CIE Group Financial Situation: Discussion with Group Management (18 Jul 2013)
Brendan Griffin: Is enough being done by CIE to assert that ownership?

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: 2014 Pre-Budget Submission: Department of Education and Skills (17 Jul 2013)
Brendan Griffin: I have just one question. Is there any data that would link the international ratings of Irish universities with the budgetary adjustments? Is this an area of concern or has it been considered? Is there a direct relationship between the expenditure reductions in recent years and the international performance?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: 2014 Pre-Budget Submission: Department of Education and Skills (17 Jul 2013)
Brendan Griffin: I will make a suggestion, although I am unsure as to whether it is worth considering. Would it be possible to pay a reduced rate in the case of someone who is in receipt of a Department of Education and Skills pension? It would be a disincentive. I welcome the move in 2011 to return people to the bottom of the scale, but could my suggestion be done?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: 2014 Pre-Budget Submission: Department of Education and Skills (17 Jul 2013)
Brendan Griffin: It is grossly unfair to graduates and those with no incomes that people who are being paid pensions are taking up these jobs.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: 2014 Pre-Budget Submission: Department of Education and Skills (17 Jul 2013)
Brendan Griffin: Yes. I welcome the acknowledgement of the distinction between working capital assets and capital assets, which is important. With regard to the €6 million figure, does that arise from applying that distinction or is that the total amount before a distinction is made between working capital and overall capital? In the context of the Haddington Road agreement, has there been any...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: 2014 Pre-Budget Submission: Department of Education and Skills (17 Jul 2013)
Brendan Griffin: I welcome the Minister and officials and thank them for attending. Every Minister will make a case as to why their Department should not have to make such large adjustments and argue their corner. Has the Minister made that case? We are looking to the future to try to break this cycle we seem to encounter every 30 years where we go bust as a country. Education will form a major part of...
- Order of Business (17 Jul 2013)
Brendan Griffin: I would like to ask about local authority housing legislation. The Taoiseach and most Deputies in the House will be aware that many local authorities are finding it difficult to deal with tenants who engage in anti-social behaviour.
