Eugene Murphy: The Senator survived, some of them did not.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (2 Dec 2021)
Eugene Murphy: I agree with Senator Kyne's comments about the hospitality business, a matter I spoke about yesterday. I believe something will happen there. I know the Government is very conscious of the difficulties. It is a great morning - I know the Leader will be very happy about this - because last night the Irish organisation, See Her Elected, scooped the award in the democracy category of the...

- Seanad: Covid-19 and the New Measures (Education): Statements (2 Dec 2021)

- Seanad: Covid-19 and the New Measures (Education): Statements (2 Dec 2021)
Eugene Murphy: I gave the Minister some extra time because it was important that Members heard her entire contribution. I think all Members will appreciate that she has clearly addressed the issue of mask wearing for children aged nine and upwards who are not comfortable with them. Along with other Members, I wish the Minister well in her portfolio which is challenging because of the ongoing Covid pandemic.
- Seanad: Covid-19 and the New Measures (Education): Statements (2 Dec 2021)
Eugene Murphy: It is great to see senior Ministers coming before the House and giving ample time to sit with us and listen to us. In fairness to all sides of the House, we all acknowledge that. It happens with the Minister, the Minister for Health and others, and it should be appreciated. It is a challenging time for the Minister and other Ministers. When we talk at parliamentary party meetings, she...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: Aligning Disability Services with the UNCRPD and Considering Future Innovation and Service Provision: Discussion ^ (2 Dec 2021)
Eugene Murphy: Senator McGreehan was very anxious that I would attend this morning and speak, if possible. Unfortunately, she cannot be here. First of all, I wish to express my thanks to all of our guests this morning. It is interesting to hear their comments and presentations. I am well aware, from people and groups I know, of the great work that Dr. Pender is doing. I strongly support the comments...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (1 Dec 2021)
Eugene Murphy: It is unbelievable that at this stage, after the past almost two years, we have such a crisis in the hospitality sector. I experienced a notable increase in phone calls and emails from people in the hotel and restaurant sector, especially on Monday and Tuesday. To say the sector is in a tailspin at present is nearly an understatement. Staff in one local hotel told me that they had a 75%...
- Seanad: Human Rights in China: Motion (1 Dec 2021)
Eugene Murphy: I was delighted to sign the motion and I praise Senator McDowell and his colleagues for bringing it forward. I have always had an issue with the subject but, in more recent years, I have become even more concerned. I welcome the Minister of State to the House and I welcome his statement. Fianna Fáil welcomes the debate and endorses the long-standing policy and practice of raising...
- Seanad: Covid-19 and the New Measures (Health): Statements (1 Dec 2021)
Eugene Murphy: I join all my colleagues in saying how upset and annoyed I was with what happened outside the Minister's home. A member of my family brought the matter to my attention and I watched the video. It is shocking. It is good to hear all sides stating we totally condemn it. I experienced this a few years ago as a Deputy. It was not as bad as this. It should not be happening anywhere. I know...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Common Agricultural Policy and Young Farmers: Engagement with Macra na Feirme (1 Dec 2021)
Eugene Murphy: I thank Deputy Fitzmaurice for giving way. It is lovely to have our guests here. I always enjoy getting emails from them. There is always a positivity about where we should go with environmental matters. They are approachable in that they suggest ideas and are very environmentally aware, and I appreciate that. Mr. Keane may have answered some of the questions for members and that is fine;...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Common Agricultural Policy and Young Farmers: Engagement with Macra na Feirme (1 Dec 2021)
Eugene Murphy: I will be very brief; I will not hold up the meeting. I thank Mr. Keane and Ms Richardson for their answers. I am glad to hear them. This next point may have been touched on and I do not expect the witnesses to go into it again - just say it has already been dealt with and I will find out about it - but I read recently that a dairy farmer down south had about 150 acres and about 140 cows....
- Seanad: Horticultural Peat (Temporary Measures) Bill 2021: Second Stage (30 Nov 2021)
Eugene Murphy: It was great to have the Minister of State and the Minister, Deputy Darragh O'Brien, with us yesterday to launch the Shannon master tourism plan. It was a great day for the region and all living around the River Shannon. Unfortunately I do not have too much time but the Acting Chairperson might be kind and give me a minute or two. I do not think it is fair for any Senator to say that...
- Seanad: Mother and Baby Homes Redress Scheme: Statements (30 Nov 2021)
Eugene Murphy: I thank the Acting Chairperson. It is nice to see him in the Chair for this debate. I know how passionately he has spoken about this issue since I have come to the Seanad. It is appropriate that he is in the Chair. I welcome the Minister to the House on behalf of the Fianna Fáil Party. We welcome this discussion today. Even though it is just a discussion on the mother and baby...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (25 Nov 2021)
Eugene Murphy: I agree with the many speakers who spoke up for our secretaries. In response to what Senator Sherlock said, I was a Deputy and two people worked with me. My secretary is doing the work of two people. Incredibly, on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays she is doing work that I would not ask anybody to do. These people are so committed and dedicated. I hope we can solve this issue as...
- Committee on Public Petitions: Direct Provision Policy and Related Matters: Discussion (Resumed) (25 Nov 2021)
Eugene Murphy: I welcome Ms Buckley and Mr. Delaney. I have no doubt about their personal sincerity in dealing with this challenging issue. I have no doubt about the Government in this regard either. I also pay tribute to the former Minister of State with special responsibility in this area, Deputy Stanton. I may be from a different political party, but we had to deal with big issues in Roscommon for a...

Eugene Murphy: Yes. Thank you.
- Committee on Public Petitions: Direct Provision Policy and Related Matters: Discussion (Resumed) (25 Nov 2021)
Eugene Murphy: Tá dhá cheist bheag agam. I will not hold the witnesses long. This engagement has been helpful and I thank the witnesses for their straight answers. I have been doing some other work here and might have missed something. They may have answered this, and if they have, that is fine. They can just say they have answered it already. First, how many staff have the witnesses working...
