- An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (5 Apr 2022)
Pat Buckley: I raise the lack of secondary school places, especially in Midleton. I acknowledge the Carrigtohill campus is going ahead but I was made aware the Minister for Education had turned to asking the additional schools to open additional classes last year. I ask the Taoiseach if there are any plans to build another secondary school in Midleton.

- Joint Committee On Health: General Scheme of the Mental Health (Amendment) Bill 2021: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Apr 2022)
Pat Buckley: I thank the witnesses for coming in today. I welcome that they have talked about moving away from a medical model. I firmly believe that is right. The witnesses have all touched on the issue of funding. I believe that a number of years ago around €10 million was going into psychological services and therapies and whatever, and over €400 million was being spent on medicines....

- Joint Committee On Health: General Scheme of the Mental Health (Amendment) Bill 2021: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Apr 2022)
Pat Buckley: On the UNCRPD issue and the optional protocol, Ms Vidal is correct in that it is a rights-based issue. This is my gripe and it has been for years.
- Joint Committee On Health: General Scheme of the Mental Health (Amendment) Bill 2021: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Apr 2022)
Pat Buckley: One can make the cake but one cannot eat it, which is the issue here. This is why I asked Ms Vidal to begin with a comment on this Bill, by asking her whether that optional protocol has to come in. There are major issues there because as we discuss a mental health Act here, the simple act of a county council putting down footpaths will mean that they will have to be wheelchair accessible,...

- Joint Committee On Health: General Scheme of the Mental Health (Amendment) Bill 2021: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Apr 2022)
Pat Buckley: I want to thank all the groups here for their work because we need people like them to get on to the Government and to shout and wave the flag. I want to stick to two matters because a lot of this has been covered. Ms Coyle mentioned that the Government should be ambitious with this Bill. Mental Health Reform mentioned the optional protocol and I brought it up in a previous meeting. That...
- Joint Committee On Health: General Scheme of the Mental Health (Amendment) Bill 2021: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Apr 2022)
Pat Buckley: To refer back to Mr. Farrelly, he spoke about the integration of the community settings and services and that he sees change and hopes for more change. I would be remiss if I did not mention this, even while we are talking about legislation to improve things - I want to refer to the Mental Health Commission's report, it can be anyone aged 16 onwards - we are still facing the prospect of...
- Committee on Public Petitions: Financial Services and Pensions Ombudsman Annual Report and Related Matters: Discussion (31 Mar 2022)
Pat Buckley: I wish the ladies a good afternoon and thank them very much. They will notice we always keep the best for last. I will be as brief as I can. I will touch on cryptocurrencies and the risk factors and reasons people take the gamble on it for a quick fix. In Ms McGovern's opinion, should there be a national warning campaign on the dos and don'ts of this but to have it, as we say in the...
- Committee on Public Petitions: Financial Services and Pensions Ombudsman Annual Report and Related Matters: Discussion (31 Mar 2022)
Pat Buckley: I will be very brief. I appreciate how easy it has been to engage with the witnesses. I have taken so much out of today's meeting. I commend the witnesses on their report. All ombudsmen's offices should be easily accessible, no matter where they are based. I have learned so much from engaging in this meeting today and the public who are watching should be able to recognise what the...

- Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (31 Mar 2022)
Pat Buckley: It has been an absolute pleasure and a great experience working with Mr. Bollins in the last petitions committee as well. It is sad to see him go. One person’s loss is another’s gain is right. It has been an absolute pleasure and an honour to work with such amazing staff within this committee. Whatever changes there are, we have to accept. We also welcome in the new staff....
