Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Mortgage Arrears Resolution Process: (Resumed) Ulster Bank (8 Apr 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: I thank the witnesses for attending. I am delighted to have the opportunity to ask them a few questions. Sustainable solutions are in all our interests, including the bank's and its customers' interest. When did Ulster Bank first offer the split mortgage in Ireland? The witness referred to it a few times.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Mortgage Arrears Resolution Process: (Resumed) Ulster Bank (8 Apr 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: This is 2014. One month ago a family I know requested a split mortgage but it was told that Ulster Bank did not offer such a product in Ireland.

Fidelma Healy Eames: Did I mention any?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Mortgage Arrears Resolution Process: (Resumed) Ulster Bank (8 Apr 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: There is no problem. I will not mention them. Can the witness comment on that?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Mortgage Arrears Resolution Process: (Resumed) Ulster Bank (8 Apr 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: The bank's mortgage arrears support unit specifically said that. I had intended asking, and I have issued a press statement on this, when the bank would commence offering split mortgages. That was due to be my question based on the advice I received. Basically, I am showing a contradiction between what the witness is saying and what the bank's staff are saying. I accept the witness's answer.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Mortgage Arrears Resolution Process: (Resumed) Ulster Bank (8 Apr 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: My apologies. That is not a problem.

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Apr 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: Go raibh maith agat, a Chathaoirligh. I wish to say to the Leader that it is time to assess the affect that cuts and austerity have had on the economy. It appears that ECB President Draghi has seen the light and is of the view that austerity is not working. We can really see the affect that austerity has had on rural economies and rural Ireland, in particular. In that context, Teagasc has...

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Apr 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: He created himself.

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Apr 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: His points were well made.

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Apr 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: Sometimes I think we do not live in the real world. I heard the reports today that the Insolvency Service of Ireland, ISI, has concluded only four mortgage deals, as Senator Hayden said, in a year. ISI said progress is slow; that is the understatement of the year. It is ineffective. My colleague, Senator Quinn, said it is time we brought that legislation back into the House to make it...

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Apr 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: The GPs have said the opposite. The Minister of State said the GPs could negotiate without influencing cost. Is that negotiation? I rest my case. Let us have a proper public consultation that includes all the stakeholders who are needed to deliver universal health care.

Seanad: Adjournment Matters: General Practitioner Services (2 Apr 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: I thank the Minister of State. I am delighted he has stated he is open to full and meaningful negotiations with the IMO because that is what the doctors are looking for. I stress that they are not looking for consultation. I accept there is no doubt that we will improve population health if we have universal health care but only if we have the doctors to serve the patients. I take from...

Seanad: Adjournment Matters: General Practitioner Services (2 Apr 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: Why does the Minister of State think this has not happened?

Seanad: Adjournment Matters: General Practitioner Services (2 Apr 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: It does not sound good.

Seanad: Adjournment Matters: General Practitioner Services (2 Apr 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: It does not sound good if nothing has happened.

Seanad: Adjournment Matters: General Practitioner Services (2 Apr 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: The Minister of State, Deputy Alex White, is very welcome. I thank him for attending in person to address this matter because it is directly related to his brief. I wish to raise the need for the Minister for Health to outline the reason he will not enter negotiations with general practitioners on the delivery of free general practitioner care for those under six if he wants reliable...

Seanad: Higher Education and Research (Consolidation and Improvement) Bill 2014: Second Stage (2 Apr 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: Sorry. I accept that I am over time so I shall return to the fundamental point that I made. I thank Senator Barrett for starting this conversation as it was badly needed. I propose the that Minister for Education and Skills puts in place an all-Ireland - not just the Republic - academic convention whereby a specific set of questions that we have compiled are posed and we achieve answers....

Seanad: Higher Education and Research (Consolidation and Improvement) Bill 2014: Second Stage (2 Apr 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: I welcome the Minister of State to the House. I thank Senator Barrett for all his work in producing the Higher Education and Research (Consolidation and Improvement) Bill 2014. I welcome this as a starting point in opening the debate on this sector. I have taken the time to speak to several academics about this legislation. I commend his definition of academic freedom and his interesting...

Seanad: Beef Industry: Motion (26 Mar 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: I am sorry I missed the first part of the Minister's speech. I was taken by this motion and given that I have strong links to this industry, I spoke to a few farmers and buyers. On checking the recommendation of the motion that a new beef regulator would be set up, it was felt that this was completely unworkable from the point of view of both farmers and buyers. The fundamental point is in...

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Mar 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: I wish to express my sadness at the untimely death of Nicky McFadden. She was a great friend to me and will be missed. I have missed her for a long time, such was the isolating nature of the disease. She had a beautiful quality in her voice and, sadly, it was the first thing that motor neurone disease attacked in Nicky. The greatest tribute we could pay to her is to continue her legacy in...
