Seanad: National Development Plan: Statements. (30 May 2006)

Joe McHugh: When will the announcement be made?

Seanad: Services for People with Disabilities. (30 May 2006)

Joe McHugh: I welcome the Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children, Deputy Tim O'Malley to the House. I look forward to hearing his reply to this matter. He is fairly up to date on developments in this area and is knowledgeable on this matter. I have met a number of parents in my county in the past six months or so and as a result I have begun to learn what it is like to have Asperger's...

Seanad: Order of Business. (30 May 2006)

Joe McHugh: I stand with my colleagues who have highlighted the serious situation caused by the outcome of a court case involving a 41 year old man who raped a 12 year old girl. The outcome of the case has sent shockwaves throughout the country, particularly among people who are personally involved in cases which are due to be brought to the High Court. We have to unite to face our collective...

Seanad: Order of Business. (17 May 2006)

Joe McHugh: Will the Leader invite the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources to the House for an urgent debate on broadband? This call is in light of a comment from our colleague, Senator Quinn, that information packs on how to use the Internet are being distributed to households in Northern Ireland. It is important to remember people in Northern Ireland are in a very fortunate...

Seanad: Departmental Information Services. (11 May 2006)

Joe McHugh: I welcome the Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture and Food, Deputy Brendan Smith, to the House. My Adjournment matter involves an issue close to his heart as the Minister of State's constituency has many agricultural issues. The specific issue concerns farmers' access to information. Mechanisms are in place which work, and many advisory bodies such as Teagasc do a phenomenal...

Seanad: Departmental Information Services. (11 May 2006)

Joe McHugh: The last part of the Minister of State's speech has summed up the issue. The concern is that there will be major reductions, which will leave existing staff under severe pressure. The question of whether there will be enough resources to accommodate the existing queries of farmers generally will be highlighted. Some farmers have compared their farming business to people on the minimum wage....

Seanad: Departmental Information Services. (11 May 2006)

Joe McHugh: It is important to keep the resources or they will be taken away.

Seanad: Order of Business. (11 May 2006)

Joe McHugh: I also welcome the calls for a debate in this regard, as well as welcoming Senator Quinn's intervention to facilitate next week's debate in respect of energy. It is unfortunate that whenever we debate energy we do so as a reaction to price increases. However, much good work is being done at local authority level where the debate is ongoing. A conference on renewable energy is taking place in...

Seanad: Schools Building Projects. (10 May 2006)

Joe McHugh: I welcome the Minister for Education and Science, Deputy Mary Hanafin, to the House. I recently received correspondence from the chairperson of the board of management of Glenswilly national school, Letterkenny, County Donegal, regarding its attempts to secure an extension to the school building. I hope the Minister is also aware of the representations made by the school's principal because...

Seanad: Schools Building Projects. (10 May 2006)

Joe McHugh: I welcome the Minister's response and appreciate her intervention. I hope the visit to school will be expedited. Irrespective of the timeframe and who was in Government in 1992, I was struck on Monday by the principal telling me he had been seeking improvements for the 33 years he has been in the job. We must examine the situation in the current context. I picked up a letter from one of the...

Seanad: Order of Business. (4 May 2006)

Joe McHugh: As we are aware, the unique personal relationship between public representatives and the electorate is the bedrock of Irish democracy. It is a feature of politics at Oireachtas and local authority levels. I was saddened to learn last Friday that the Taoiseach said during a visit to County Donegal that he was unaware of the extent of the crisis in the health service in that county. While it...

Seanad: Order of Business. (4 May 2006)

Joe McHugh: We are all aware of the anomalies in the health system. Senator Daly has reflected the frustration of many people in this regard. Some members of his parliamentary party expressed their frustration last night. The people of Donegal have been ventilating their frustration for nine years, but they are not being heard.

Seanad: Order of Business. (4 May 2006)

Joe McHugh: The Taoiseach said in Donegal that he is unaware of the crisis. What is happening? We should start the debate on this issue by considering whether, as a democracy, we should authorise the transfer of ultimate responsibility for the health service to a smaller party that does not have a mandate from the whole country.

Seanad: Order of Business. (4 May 2006)

Joe McHugh: It will be a matter for the people the next time.

Seanad: Order of Business. (4 May 2006)

Joe McHugh: I just asked the question.

Seanad: Irish Language: Motion. (5 Apr 2006)

Joe McHugh: I second the motion.

Seanad: Irish Language: Motion. (5 Apr 2006)

Joe McHugh: No.

Seanad: Irish Language: Motion. (5 Apr 2006)

Joe McHugh: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire. Tá lúcháir ormsa go bhfuil deis agam ceist na Gaeilge a phlé anseo anocht. Tá meas mór agam ar an Ghaeilge. Rugadh agus tógadh in aice le Gaeltacht Ros Goill mé, áit a bhfuil éacht mhór déantá ag an phobal an Ghaeilge a choinneáil beo, a fhorbairt agus a chur chun chinn. Tá comharthaíocht agus fógraíocht le feiceáil i nGaeilge. Tá an teanga le...

Seanad: Irish Language: Motion. (5 Apr 2006)

Joe McHugh: I spent 16 years trying to learn the language and not one teacher told us about the beauty of the words. Senators Ó Murchú and O'Toole and others know about it when speaking them. The have a love of the language, but nobody ever teaches pupils to foster such a love or informs them of the significance of the words and their attachment to the past. We should be focusing on this.

Seanad: Order of Business. (5 Apr 2006)

Joe McHugh: In welcoming last week's debate on agriculture, it is important we keep it to the front of our agenda. New Teagasc advice will be presented to the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government and the Department of Agriculture and Food, and both Ministers should examine it comprehensively and adhere to the advice and guidance therein. On another matter raised here today,...
