Noel Dempsey: The helicopters in use by the Garda Air Support Unit are unsuitable for maritime Search and Rescue tasks. They are not equipped or configured for maritime Search and Rescue and would certainly not be suitable for most of the conditions and circumstances where SAR operations are deployed in the Irish Search and Rescue region.

Noel Dempsey: Section 9 of the Road Traffic Act 2004 sets out the range of special speed limits that may be applied by local authorities through bye-laws. This legislation is kept under review by my Department on an ongoing basis. There are, however, currently no proposals to provide for a 40km per hour special speed limit option in addition to the 50kmph and 30kmph options that are currently provided for.
