Written Answers — Waste Management: Waste Management (1 Jul 2008)

Deirdre Clune: Question 599: To ask the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government if he will make a statement on the steps he is taking to clean up the former Irish Steel Plant at Haulbowline, County Cork; and his views on reports that contaminated waste containing chromium 6 and other toxic materials is being covered up rather than removed from the site. [26047/08]

Toxic Waste. (26 Jun 2008)

Deirdre Clune: I will ask the Minister of State a succinct question rather than making a long statement. In her opening statement, she said that the Government carried out a comprehensive site investigation in 2004 to determine the levels of contamination at the site. Did that investigation give the full extent of the contamination or have we discovered something new either today in the newspaper or when...

Toxic Waste. (26 Jun 2008)

Deirdre Clune: This site was in operation for years.

Toxic Waste. (26 Jun 2008)

Deirdre Clune: The Minister said that the Government carried out a comprehensive site investigation so it was only a surface site investigation that was not comprehensive and did not determine the full level of contamination. That is the nub of the question and a very serious issue. The Government was not aware of the extent of the contamination until such time as contractors went in at the end of the...

Toxic Waste. (26 Jun 2008)

Deirdre Clune: The Government paid somebody to carry out a comprehensive site investigation which did not throw up the level of contamination that we now know exists. Was the Government aware in 2004 of the existence of chromium 6, which has been mentioned by the German company, and that this type of contamination was contained in the site?

Toxic Waste. (26 Jun 2008)

Deirdre Clune: The problem is that this contamination would have been leaking into the waterways. It would have been in the tidal area and there would have been rainfall which would have washed through the site and washed this material into the harbour and environment. It is disgraceful that a full site investigation was not carried out. We now realise that there has only been a skimming of the surface.

Toxic Waste. (26 Jun 2008)

Deirdre Clune: That is not a full site investigation.

Intoxicating Liquor Bill 2008: Second Stage (Resumed) (26 Jun 2008)

Deirdre Clune: I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the debate. Members have given their views on the state of the nation in the debate regarding alcohol consumption and that is why the debate is important. A number of the measures in the Bill attempt to reduce the availability of alcohol and to focus on binge drinking and licensing. Dr. Gordon Holmes and the alcohol advisory group should...

Victims' Rights Bill 2008: Second Stage (Resumed) (25 Jun 2008)

Deirdre Clune: This is an important Bill and I am delighted we have an opportunity to focus on victims, who in many cases feel and are alienated from the justice system. The debacle that has gone on in the past week started with the Minister's hastily arranged press conference and that is an appalling indictment of him. I hope he will take on board some of the proposals contained in Deputy Shatter's Bill,...

Written Answers — Sports Capital Programme: Sports Capital Programme (24 Jun 2008)

Deirdre Clune: Question 239: To ask the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism when he expects to allocate funding under the sports capital programme 2008; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24696/08]

[24112/08]

Job Losses. (19 Jun 2008)

Deirdre Clune: Question 5: To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if her attention has been drawn to the loss of high quality jobs that require quality education and training, most notably a company, the details of which are supplied, in County Cork whose employees have third or fourth level education qualifications; her views on whether Ireland is losing knowledge economy...

Job Losses. (19 Jun 2008)

Deirdre Clune: I asked about this company because the jobs lost were high-tech in nature. Some 10% of employees had post-graduate qualifications while 50% of those in the technology centre had attained a fourth-level standard of education. In the Taoiseach's acceptance speech recently he spoke of the value of science, technology and innovation and suggested these are the types of jobs we seek to create....

Job Losses. (19 Jun 2008)

Deirdre Clune: Were costs not a factor in the closure?

Job Losses. (19 Jun 2008)

Deirdre Clune: It is important that we encourage a take up-in the study of science and technology. However, the Freescale closure sends out the wrong message to students such as those who have just completed the leaving certificate. The Minister of State encourages such people to study science and technology, yet the type of job that the Government and the IDA seek to attract is gone. Does this send out...

Job Losses. (19 Jun 2008)

Deirdre Clune: If we are losing jobs in the area——

Price Inflation. (19 Jun 2008)

Deirdre Clune: The Joint Committee on Enterprise, Trade and Employment met recently with the National Consumer Agency to discuss the high cost of foodstuffs in Ireland. In addition, many media reports state that basic foodstuffs are more expensive in Ireland than anywhere else. The National Consumer Agency carries out numerous surveys and undertakes a great deal of research in regard to food prices. For...
