Mary White: Exactly.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Belfast Protests: Discussion (24 Jan 2013)
Mary White: Yes, it is terrible.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Belfast Protests: Discussion (24 Jan 2013)
Mary White: This committee is totally supportive of Mr. Roberts getting the same rate of corporation tax. It would be fully beneficial to the whole island. If there is anything we can do to help Mr. Roberts on that, we will do so.
- Seanad: Order of Business (24 Jan 2013)
Mary White: I wish to raise again a matter about which we spoke yesterday, which is suicide among young men. In 2011, 525 people died from suicide. I ask the Leader to think of the reaction if an airplane crashed in Ireland with 525 people on board. What would be the Government's reaction? It would wipe out a village. This is happening on an annual basis and my research indicates that the figure is...
- Seanad: Order of Business (24 Jan 2013)
Mary White: Make no mistake, there is a national crisis of suicide. The rate of suicide has increased due to a lack of employment for young men and other people. Mental health stress has increased substantially because of the economic situation and particularly because young people do not have jobs. When I co-founded LÃr Chocolates in 1987, I saw the transformation in a person who got a job. The...

- Seanad: Order of Business (23 Jan 2013)
Mary White: In 2008 I published a policy paper on what we could do to deal with the issue of suicide in the new Ireland. At the time there was no doubt we had a very high rate of suicide among young men. The economic crisis has had very serious consequences for young people, particularly young men who cannot find employment and have financial difficulties. There is a serious level of stress among men...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Review of Legislation on Prostitution: Discussion (Resumed) (16 Jan 2013)
Mary White: I will be as succinct as possible. It is a tragedy that the trafficking of women has been mixed up with the issue of prostitution because they are two entirely separate issues. Every discussion of prostitution becomes emotional and immediately strays into the areas of trafficking. This is seriously hindering efforts to find a solution that addresses the needs of female, male and...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Implementation of Government Decision Following Expert Group Report into Matters Relating to A, B and C v. Ireland (10 Jan 2013)
Mary White: The hearings of the last few days have been a momentous event. An equally momentous event was when we passed legislation for civil partnerships. It was a very moving occasion. My question is for the representatives of the Catholic Church. If priests were allowed to marry, as clergy from other religious institutions can, and if they had daughters, perhaps if a daughter was raped and...
- Seanad: Finance (Local Property Tax) Bill 2012: Second Stage (19 Dec 2012)
Mary White: I welcome the Minister. As Senator Crown said this tax is daft and nuts; I concur with him. Senator Mark Daly is a professional in the area of valuation and he has put it very crisply. Fianna Fáil is totally opposed to the introduction of a deeply unfair property tax. The Government's proposals for a property tax will hit struggling home owners at a time when they can least afford it....
- Seanad: Finance (Local Property Tax) Bill 2012: Second Stage (19 Dec 2012)
Mary White: I believe that Irish people who earn a good deal of money are more willing to part with it and it has to be addressed.
