Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Sláintecare Implementation: Discussion (Resumed) (7 Dec 2022)

Martin Conway: I am always astounded by the low level of take-up of the flu vaccine among healthcare workers. What are the latest figures on that? Are there campaigns within the healthcare community to try to get those figures up?

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Wastewater Treatment (6 Dec 2022)

Martin Conway: Before I get into my Commencement matter, I wish to let the Minister of State know that checktheregister.ie, which is under his stewardship, is not digitally accessible to the blind and visually impaired community in Ireland, so more than 150,000 people in Ireland cannot register to vote using the website. I urge the Minister of State to look at that as a matter of urgency. It came to my...

Martin Conway: I appreciate that.

Martin Conway: Absolutely.

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Wastewater Treatment (6 Dec 2022)

Martin Conway: I appreciate that.

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Wastewater Treatment (6 Dec 2022)

Martin Conway: I am not looking for a specific date but I would like to think it will be in quarter 1 of 2023. It is right to put an evaluation panel in place. That is good governance, and I welcome that. I spoke about Broadford, but Cooraclare is a key scheme as well. I would also name Carrigaholt and Doolin. No development of any significance can happen in Doolin - this has been the case for the past...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (6 Dec 2022)

Martin Conway: Every time we see the flag flying over Leinster House, it creates a great sense of pride in the freedom of the country and the fact that we live in a democracy. That was recognised by the world 100 years ago today. It is fitting and appropriate for us to recognise that it was a difficult and traumatic time for our country. However, it was at that time we were first recognised by the world...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (30 Nov 2022)

Martin Conway: I support Senator Garvey's contribution on public transport, particularly in the north Clare area. As somebody who uses public transport most of the time, because a car is not an option in my case, her points were well made. There are two major issues which I have been highlighting for a long time. First, there is a variance in fares between rural and urban in the first instance, and also...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Citizens' Assembly (29 Nov 2022)

Martin Conway: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Naughton, to the House on this important issue. We all know that families the length and breadth of the country have been impacted by the drugs crisis. This crisis is impacting on counties, cities, towns, parishes, villages, streets and street corners and young, middle-aged and even older people. It is an epidemic, which Governments throughout the...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Citizens' Assembly (29 Nov 2022)

Martin Conway: I thank the Minister of State for giving a specific timeline. I take it the citizens' assembly on drugs will be up and running by the end of quarter 1 2023, which is welcome.I also welcome the suggested potential discussion points that will be in the terms of reference regarding the health implications of drugs on our citizens, and indeed, the implications of drugs on young people and...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (29 Nov 2022)

Martin Conway: I agree with what my colleagues, Senators Davitt and Malcolm Byrne, said about these dogs. I would love to know how many people have been convicted for breaching the legislation in terms of not muzzling their dogs and I think that it would be an interesting statistic. I hope that we will now have a national debate on this issue. More of these animals should be added to the list of...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (29 Nov 2022)

Martin Conway: I acknowledge the role that the Cathaoirleach played in this regard before he became Cathaoirleach. The legislation is the result of the work done by members of all parties and none, and particularly the NGO sector which put legislators under pressure. The Bill is good legislation.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (29 Nov 2022)

Martin Conway: I am constantly baffled by the following. Why did it take so long to introduce the legislation?

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (29 Nov 2022)

Martin Conway: The legislation was discussed between seven and ten years ago. It went before the health committee between 2011 and 2016, and a report was prepared.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (29 Nov 2022)

Martin Conway: Why does it take so long for non-controversial legislation to feed its way through the system and the Civil Service by and large? Why does it take so long for good legislation that will impact on people's live to come through the system? Perhaps the Leader might get an answer to my questions at some stage.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (24 Nov 2022)

Martin Conway: I, too, welcome the Ukrainian Ambassador. I wish to voice my support for the motion and call out, as we do here regularly, the actions of Putin and Russia, and what is going on in Ukraine. It is genocide and it is horrific. We stand in solidarity with the ambassador and her people. I also welcome the two new routes announced by Ryanair to and from Shannon Airport to Porto and Naples. The...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (23 Nov 2022)

Martin Conway: The Acting Leader may recall on 3 April this year I spoke on the Order of Business about a young lady, Aimee Foley, from my hometown of Ennistymon. I spoke about her bravery in waiving her anonymity and speaking openly, honestly and candidly about her experience at the hands of her father. I spoke about how disappointed she was with the justice system where he only received a short sentence...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (17 Nov 2022)

Martin Conway: Like others, I was very sorry to hear about the passing of Bridget’s brother, Pat. I absolutely want to pass on my sympathies to Bridget in this very difficult time for her and her family. I thank everybody who attended the briefing that I organised on Digital Day on the whole issue of digital accessibility for people with print disabilities, dyslexia, people who are blind and...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (17 Nov 2022)

Martin Conway: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Central Bank (Amendment) Bill 2022: Second Stage (17 Nov 2022)

Martin Conway: I commend my colleagues for tabling this Bill. It makes absolute sense. As Senator Malcolm Byrne said, similar legislation exists in other countries and there is international precedent for it. I have no doubt but that the Minister of State understands the logic behind this Bill. Why should somebody suffer as a result of a condition they have overcome? There are other people who find it...
