Public Accounts Committee: Bord na gCon: Financial Statements 2015 (4 May 2017)

Alan Kelly: Is there anybody here who can answer that question? In our time on this committee, nobody has ever come in and been unable to answer a question like that.

Public Accounts Committee: Bord na gCon: Financial Statements 2015 (4 May 2017)

Alan Kelly: Can you answer the specific question?

Public Accounts Committee: Bord na gCon: Financial Statements 2015 (4 May 2017)

Alan Kelly: Just for clarity, the Deputy has asked a very specific question based on the statement to the agriculture committee. Can we have a clear answer? Either there is a plan and it is published or there is not, or else nobody knows about it.

Public Accounts Committee: Bord na gCon: Financial Statements 2015 (4 May 2017)

Public Accounts Committee: Bord na gCon: Financial Statements 2015 (4 May 2017)

Alan Kelly: Deputy Creed - sorry, Mr. Creed, I am giving you an elevation because of where you are sitting - with all due respect, there is a specific question pertaining to a commitment given at the agriculture committee, to which the representatives here do not know the answer.

Public Accounts Committee: Bord na gCon: Financial Statements 2015 (4 May 2017)

Alan Kelly: Mr. Gleeson may want to save his fellow witnesses.

Public Accounts Committee: Bord na gCon: Financial Statements 2015 (4 May 2017)

Public Accounts Committee: Bord na gCon: Financial Statements 2015 (4 May 2017)

Alan Kelly: It is not that long ago, though.

Public Accounts Committee: Bord na gCon: Financial Statements 2015 (4 May 2017)

Alan Kelly: He asked a very specific question. Are you happy, as the officer in the Department - I know the Secretary General is the Accounting Officer - are you happy to sign off on the funding that taxpayers give to this organisation, given the evidence today and what you have already stated? Last time you were in here you said in evidence that you meet them once a year.

Public Accounts Committee: Bord na gCon: Financial Statements 2015 (4 May 2017)

Alan Kelly: Are you happy with the financial performance of Bord na gCon? Answer the question please.

Public Accounts Committee: Bord na gCon: Financial Statements 2015 (4 May 2017)

Alan Kelly: I wish to raise a matter for clarification and then I will let Deputy Aylward conclude. Mr. Gleeson said that there are historical issues here, a previous board, a change of Departments and so on. Obviously, the issue of the decision to build the site in Limerick is a critical component of this and we all understand that. That is probably one thing we all agree on, but there are many more...

Alan Kelly: I refer to the CEO at the time when the industry was collapsing.

Public Accounts Committee: Bord na gCon: Financial Statements 2015 (4 May 2017)

Alan Kelly: Yes, but it does sound strange, given the evidence given today by Mr. Gleeson regarding the fact that there are board legacy issues, which is not something I respect, and that it is a matter of a previous board, that it was the same Department that asked for the contract of the CEO of that previous board to be extended based on the CEO's performance.

Public Accounts Committee: Bord na gCon: Financial Statements 2015 (4 May 2017)

Alan Kelly: It is consistent with the evidence given previously by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and given today by the Department regarding a hands-off approach. It is also a policy volte-face. Regarding the review that was conducted in 2010 of the national State assets and liabilities, did the Department not say that a disposal of assets regarding Bord na gCon would have a very...

Alan Kelly: The same CEO is in place.

Public Accounts Committee: Bord na gCon: Financial Statements 2015 (4 May 2017)

Alan Kelly: I will let Deputy Aylward contribute presently. I will quote from the Department:€90m has been invested in bringing stadia up to a high standard; it is highly unlikely this investment would be recovered on the open market. Despite this, we have had a decision in the past 48 hours.
