Seanad: Order of Business. (13 Jul 2004)

Paul Coghlan: Will the Leader respond to the issue raised by Senators Brian Hayes and O'Meara on the State Airports Bill? It is conceded that there is a drafting error with the Bill and that it must be returned to the Lower House. Will the Leader clarify this matter? Will the Leader also clarify how the Aer Rianta debt problem and a proposed court action by one of its directors may impinge on the Bill?

Seanad: Order of Business. (13 Jul 2004)

Paul Coghlan: I acknowledge the Leader's forthrightness in her comments on how this Bill is unnecessary, rushed, premature and not good legislation. She certainly struck a chord on this side of the House because we are all of that view——

Seanad: Order of Business. (13 Jul 2004)

Paul Coghlan: ——whatever about chords struck on the other side. I am slightly confused and I ask the Leader for clarification. I appreciate and expected that was the Leader's view from answers she previously gave on the subject. However, I thought she put on the record following a meeting with the Taoiseach that she was happy the Bill had to be taken now. Will the Leader clarify in her own inimitable...

Seanad: Order of Business. (7 Jul 2004)

Paul Coghlan: In the light of events unfolding, when does the Leader believe operational control will commence with regard to the business to which I cannot refer, No. 21 on the Order Paper, because it is not due until next week? What will be the status of the existing board when that Bill is enacted? What will happen to the Great Southern Hotels group?

Seanad: Order of Business. (7 Jul 2004)

Paul Coghlan: It is not mentioned in the Bill and I wonder what will happen to the group. Will the hotels be sold off piecemeal?

Seanad: Order of Business. (7 Jul 2004)

Paul Coghlan: I will do so and I am very grateful to the Cathaoirleach. Will the Leader reply on the main items, the operational control and the board and when the other boards are to come into being? They are in place already like shadow boards. I look forward to the Leader's reply.

Seanad: Order of Business. (1 Jul 2004)

Paul Coghlan: Following from the point made by Senator Ryan, can the Leader confirm that the State Airports Bill will be on the Order Paper next week? She answered recently that this is a matter for the other House, which begins Committee Stage of the Bill today. However, the leaks emanating from various Government sources are confusing and any clarification from the Leader would be welcome. With regard to...

Seanad: Order of Business. (30 Jun 2004)

Paul Coghlan: In view of the Leader's answer yesterday to Senator Ross, I join with Senator O'Toole and Senator Finucane in inquiring further about the Aer Rianta legislation. Given the views expressed last night, could the Deputy Leader confirm that the Government has reversed engines on this matter, that it is going back to the Cabinet for review and that, as others have suggested, the House will not see...

Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Jun 2004)

Paul Coghlan: It goes without saying.

Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Jun 2004)

Paul Coghlan: Do not leave them out.

Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Jun 2004)

Paul Coghlan: When will operations commence?

Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Jun 2004)

Paul Coghlan: I second Senator Brian Hayes's motion.

Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Jun 2004)

Paul Coghlan: I do.

Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Jun 2004)

Paul Coghlan: That is friendly fire once it does not knock me.

Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Jun 2004)

Paul Coghlan: I appreciate that. I wish to be associated with the warm tributes to the Taoiseach and his back-up team on their achievement with an agreed wording for the European Constitution. The national interest should be prioritised and both Houses should get behind him for the Presidency of the Commission. It would bring great credit to the country to have an Irish person as President. We are all...

Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Jun 2004)

Paul Coghlan: Exactly. That could be done.

Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Jun 2004)

Paul Coghlan: There is no obstacle there. On a separate issue, when will the cost implications of the break-up of Aer Rianta be known? We know it must be financially viable or the Minister for Finance will exercise his veto and it will not happen. I wonder what Mr. O'Hanlon and the board think of that decision. When does the Leader believe operational control by any of the new boards will commence? I was...

Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Jun 2004)

Paul Coghlan: Somebody was getting it right.

Seanad: Housing (Stage Payments) Bill 2004: Second Stage. (16 Jun 2004)

Paul Coghlan: The Minister of State knows what I am saying. There are not many differences between us over this matter. I am sure we all agree it is totally inequitable and unacceptable that a small country such as ours should carry out the practice we have been discussing. It is not carried out in Dublin but only in pockets in the rest of the country, particularly Cork and Limerick. I am not saying a word...

Seanad: Housing (Stage Payments) Bill 2004: Second Stage. (16 Jun 2004)

Paul Coghlan: I thank everyone who has contributed to this worthwhile debate. I have been overwhelmed by——
