- Mortgage Restructuring Arrangement Bill 2013: Second Stage [Private Members] (1 Oct 2013)
Clare Daly: I compliment Deputy Joan Collins and her team on bringing forward this legislation. There is no doubt whatsoever that this is the defining issue in Irish society. Hundreds of thousands of individuals are already in crisis as a result of mortgage difficulties, with tens of thousands of others waiting in the wings to join them. The question of whether our society responds to this issue...
- Road Traffic (No. 2) Bill 2013: Second Stage (1 Oct 2013)
Clare Daly: I propose to share time with Deputy Mattie McGrath. As the other Deputies have said, road safety is an enormously important issue. The purpose is clearly to set up a system under which we can reduce fatalities as much as possible, and there are many different cogs in the wheel. The system must be absolutely transparent, and it feeds into many aspects other Deputies have touched on. I...
- Leaders' Questions (1 Oct 2013)
Clare Daly: St. Michael's House does not need to be patronised by the Taoiseach; it needs €1 million which was cut from its budget recently and it needs a restoration of some of the €12 million which was cut previously, in order to allow it to provide accommodation for the 330 people who are on its urgent priority list. The Taoiseach absolutely failed to address the question he was asked....
- Leaders' Questions (1 Oct 2013)
Clare Daly: The Garda Síochána and the Government have admitted to the shortcomings in the system but they have not held their hands up and taken responsibility. The only people for whom there have been repercussions are the two men who put their jobs on the line, one of whom has no job, who was driven out of the force and the other who cannot do his job properly because he has been denied...
- Leaders' Questions (1 Oct 2013)
Clare Daly: The Taoiseach should be aware that approximately six weeks ago St. Michael's House, a vital service for those with intellectual disabilities, was faced with the body blow of a further €1 million of cuts on top of the €12 million that it has already endured. This organisation, which has 330 persons on its waiting list, now must grapple with serious cuts with which, the Minister...

- Leaders' Questions (26 Sep 2013)
Clare Daly: The Minister is probably aware that yesterday there was a briefing in the House by the ESB group of unions. They represent 13,000 workers whose pension scheme is being unilaterally changed, from a defined benefit to a defined contribution scheme, along with serious funding problems whose cost is being transferred solely on to the shoulders of those workers. These people are about to join...
- Leaders' Questions (26 Sep 2013)
Clare Daly: It would eliminate the contributory philosophy which puts value only on paid employment rather than on other kinds of contribution. The best thing is that it would not cost the Government anything but would save it money if it stood the present pension policy on its head and directed some of the massive tax concessions given to the wealthy into this scheme.
- Leaders' Questions (26 Sep 2013)
Clare Daly: Will the Minister end a pension system which is based on tax reliefs that subsidise the wealthy and ensure that a philosophy which ensures that a person who is poor in his or her working life will be poor in retirement is replaced with the idea of a guaranteed, decent pension for all, on retirement?
- Leaders' Questions (26 Sep 2013)
Clare Daly: The Minister is correct that this is an international problem but he does not yet rule the world.
- Leaders' Questions (26 Sep 2013)
Clare Daly: However, he is accountable for what goes on in this country. He has singularly failed to address the issue I posed to him, namely, the very real, costed proposal that has landed on his desk, which offers the prospect of raising living standards for retirees in this State while at the same time it saves the State money. This is an ideological question. I understand the Labour Party has lost...
