The Bill has been sent to us for pre-legislative scrutiny and we will now meet the representative of the Department and Children and Youth Affairs. I welcome Ms Noreen Leahy, principal officer in the adoption policy unit, and Ms Anne Marie Kilkenny, assistant principal officer. This is the opening session of the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Proceeds of Sale of Aer Lingus: Motion (7 Oct 2015)

Jerry Buttimer: I welcome the fund. I also welcome the Minister of State who in his earlier remarks mentioned how the fund pertained to connectivity. Given that we are an island nation, he also said it was important the projects be commercially viable. As Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works, OPW, he is charged with responsibility for the management of many heritage sites....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Proceeds of Sale of Aer Lingus: Motion (7 Oct 2015)

Jerry Buttimer: I am.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Proceeds of Sale of Aer Lingus: Motion (7 Oct 2015)

Jerry Buttimer: No, I am consistent on this issue all the time, unlike others who have come to the table late. Obviously, the need for connectivity is critical. I welcome the existence of the fund, but there is a proposal on the table concerning the re-establishment of the Cork-Dublin flight. I acknowledge that the public service obligation, PSO, levy regulations preclude certain activities. There is,...

Marriage Bill 2015: Report Stage (7 Oct 2015)

Jerry Buttimer: I commend the Minister and her staff, some of whom are present, on making such a major input into the Bill before us, the legislation providing for the referendum and the Children and Family Relationships Act. The work of departmental staff in preparing the legislation should be acknowledged. This is an historic and important day in the history of the State. The people have spoken....

Marriage Bill 2015: Report Stage (7 Oct 2015)

Jerry Buttimer: The last point made by Deputy McNamara regarding the solemniser is a serious one and I would not like to see that being diluted. Now that we have almost passed this marriage equality legislation, there may be other changes to marriage that Deputies have in mind. The point made by the Deputy is one we must look at in the context of all the contributions to this debate. How marriage is...

Marriage Bill 2015: Report Stage (7 Oct 2015)

Jerry Buttimer: I attended a civil partnership in Christchurch in Cork city. It is absolutely beautiful. It is an old church. The Acting Chairman, Deputy Keating, sings in a choir and is a musician. The atmosphere at this wonderful venue was befitting of the occasion. We changed the ceremony venue from being in the registry office. I would like to speak about the context of what we have done as a...

Marriage Bill 2015: Report Stage (7 Oct 2015)

Jerry Buttimer: The Deputy raises an interesting point in that there is an issue in terms of people being able to get married on a Saturday, for example. I do not necessarily agree with him on who can perform the ceremony. The appropriate person is the registrar. I met the registrar in Cork and her ceremonies, whether marriages or civil partnerships, are among the most moving ceremonies one could attend....

Marriage Bill 2015: Report Stage (7 Oct 2015)

Jerry Buttimer: I agree with Deputy Shatter's suggestion. I welcome the amendment and the reduced fee. We can consider this in the context of from where we have come. Civil partnership, as the State allowed it, was the only legal recognition that men and women of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender, LGBT, community could get but because of the vote of the people, we are no longer being locked out....
